I disagree with most of that, but that would be a topic for a different thread. Oil companies profit margins are not that high.

OK look at forbes Feb of 08 thats where i got my statics so if i am wrong on that hay blame forbes mag. and chevron (just chevron) posted an quarterly record hi of around 4 billion just last quarter and and so if you add all of them (them being big oil) you would have around what Forbes said of 13 billion

You're right. They earn astronomical amounts of money. But once you factor in the costs of all the machinery, drilling, shipping, paying thousands of workers wages, and all the other costs, they're not keeping much of those profits at all. They earn billions in profits, but it's an expensive industry to be in. There are tons of non-oil companies with much higher profit margins. They might not make as much money, but their cost of doing business is much less though. I was just reading a link that said the average profit margin for an oil company is around 8 to 10%, while the profit margin for a company like Google is around 25%.
Also, it's pretty confusing (for me, at least) what factors determine the cost of a barrel of crude, but the oil companies do not directly set the price we pay at the pump.

I understand what their profits are. With all due respect, oil company profits have nothing to do with whatever financial troubles you may have.

Latest mpg: 17.5 up from 16. Both times, I did not drive until empty. I try to keep the rpm's under 2500. I don't go over 60mph. 80% of my commute is between 35-55 mph, about 30 miles roundtrip.

Did you do anything different this time around to get the improvement?

No, other than I went longer on this last fill-up, so the overall fuel economy appears to be better. The 17.5 was spread out over a longer distance/time.

However, my mpg is about to go to zero for awhile. Read my other thread

19.5 was my best but that was 90% highway and driving slow. Going 70 and going my usual route I get about 17-18. If I drive city it goes down to 14-15.
