Suggest you buy one of these, it will not only show and explain how to change the water pump, it also contains other information you will find useful in the future. Once you read how to change the water pump, you will understand why it is not explained here.

While you are collecting your new manual and the water pump, you will need to rent a "clutch fan wrench". Do not take the belts off the water pump before you remove the fan/clutch assembly.

The only thing you might run into is the clutch fan. The correct tool is the easiest way to get it off, I picked one up at Advance Auto for cheap. You might be able to rent one.

The water pump bolts are notorious for snapping off in the timing cover.

+1 on the manual for the torque specifications, but otherwise it's a matter of removing everything in the way, removing the water pump, cleaning up, installing new pump, putting everything back on, and topping off the coolant. It will be messy, so make sure to have a drain pan handy.

Anyone know how that Fan Clutch tool works? The one the auto parts lent me does not seem to fit, and they guy behind the counter swore it would fit a 2002 Ford Ranger, 3.0 liter. I cannot seem to figure out where the large wrench attaches to? Help and thanks!
