ABS, check engine light, no speedo, and no odometer all at once

First post, so a brief introduction: I am too old to work on cars, but too stubborn to give up! I can get down on the floor and skooch under the chassis just fine.....I have trouble getting back up.....

I am driving my older son's 1999 Ford Ranger 2 wheel drive. Has the 4 cylinder with dual ignition. Manual 5 speed. My wife took it for a drive to pick up the younger boy and came back with:

ABS light on
Check engine light on
No speedo
No Odo (digital)

The car has 90 k on it. I have used this forum in the past for dome light issues. Thanks for that. I searched for my situation and couldn't come up with an answer.

Any ideas?

First off welcome to FRF! Yep, the Lima 2.3L (2.5L 1998 - Early 2001) got 4 more plugs around 1990 for emissions reasons, functionally speaking, you only really need 4 for the engine to run properly. Sounds to me like the classic bad rear abs/speed sensor. About $20 and is on the top of differential so you have to raise the truck up to replace it, but it's easy to replace too. BTW what do you mean digital odo? Rangers didn't get a digital odo until 2004.

Well, maybe it's not digital. I'll go look. Not only can't I get up from the garage floor, I can't see that well, either. I will look for the sensor, and replace it.

And one of the lamps for the dash is out. Far left that illuminates the gas gauge. How do I get to that one?

The burnt out dash light is a little more involved. I've never pulled the dash in a Ranger so I'm not sure.

remove radio bezel, remove cluster bezel, remove cluster,,, lights are twist ins

they r black see pic

after 1998 the VSS sensor works speedo in simple terms

As already stated, definitely sounds like that bad ABS/speedo sensor. I just replaced mine two months. It is very easy to replace, but you will need to lift the back of the truck. you might be able to do it without lifting it, but I didn't have enough space to work.

When it happened to me my truck completely locked up on me, No speedo, ABS light, and O/D off light flashing. My truck also was slamming into gears before locking itself into 1st gear. Funny how such a small sensor can cause so much mayhem.

Hay I'm new to day . Own 1999 Ranger $x4 with 4.0 in it. ABS light came on at first intermitenly . Then stayed on . Had tested for code was instructed to replace Rear speed sensor . Did that .No Help. Code still come up repace rear seed sensor on dif.Thought might have bad part. Replaced again . Disconnected the battery to reset . still no luck. Any Ideas ? Just having Problems with ABS .

sounds like a wiring problem to me

I called ford .They said to disconect the Poss Post on the Battery For 10 min. then reconect . That is how to reset ABS light. Did that . ABS still will not reset. any ideas?

Yeah anything before 01 uses the abs sensor as the speedo sensor. It uses the raw data for this function, after that they use a seperate sensor for the speed function.

ABS Codes are:
B11230 Rear Speed Sensor
B1102A Speed Accelator Malfunction
C1676 Battery Pack Out of Range

Anybody can help with these?

Finally got around to working on the truck today. Only a year later. Put this stuff off long enough, you die, and it's somebody else's problem! Changed out the sensor on the top of the rear diff. Pulled the instrument cluster out and changed all of the 194 bulbs. Before I did this, I disconnected the negative cable from the battery.

Just driving around the block, I don't have the ABS and Check Engine lights on any longer. But no speedometer.

Any ideas?
