Default Result of improper jumper cable hookup question

Having jumped my truck many times I have to kick my own butt for doing this. Tonight I needed to jump my truck once again. However I didn't take the time to get a flashlight to see things as I should have.

I had the source battery hooked up correctly but had the negative cable on the positive post on the truck being jumped. I should have known something was wrong right away as the horn sounded as i attached the positive lead to the engine block. Once i discovered my error and corrected it I let it charge for a bit and started the truck. It started fine. I disconnected cables and went to put them in the truck bed and the engine began to stall sputtered once and died. The check engine light was on . Had to hook jumpers back up and once again it started. However I noted the battery light on the dash was on constant. And as I manipulated different controls other dash indicators came on like ABS and airbag and the check engine light came on once again as engine died a second time.

I did a quick search of the results of improper jumper cable hook up and saw the computer mentioned. This sound like the worst that could occur? What are these computers going for new .

This might be a long shot but it may have just gliched the computer a little bit. Might want to try and unhook the battery and let the truck sit for about 20 min. This is how u usaully reset all the recorded data in the computer. Worth a shot I guess.

^^Try that, if you do need a new computer, you can pull one from a junkyard for 50.00 or less

Well I gave battery disconnect thing a try and for allot longer than 15-20 minutes. After jumping it starts up fine and runs normal however once I pull the jumper cables and it has to rely on its own charging system the thing dies after a few minutes running off the battery charge and the dash battery light was on the entire jump and solo run.

Any thoughts on perhaps blown alternator diodes?

probably fried the alt or at minimum blew the fuse in the circuit. pull the alt off and have them test it.

Well that's good news! Glad it wasn't something major. I bet you'll never reverse the cables again lol
