Help! Ford Ranger with missing ECU/PCM
Just picked up a Ford Ranger Edge year 2000 2x4 3.0 litre 5 speed manual Single cab. The problem I have is that the ECU/PCM unit is missing. We are living in Western Samoa. Seems like this has been imported from Hawaii. I am trying to figure out how to go about getting a replacement unit. Can anyone give me a heads up on where to start?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I would love to get this working.
Thanks so much.

Re: Help! Ford Ranger with missing ECU/PCM
They didnt make a edge in 2000
Do you have salvage yards in Samoa? If so I would try there first
Dont know if car-part.com will help any since your in Samoa.
Also check ebay.

Re: Help! Ford Ranger with missing ECU/PCM
Under the hood near the passengers side hood hinge there should be a sticker with the emissions code for the ECM. No matter where you get an ecm its going to need programmed by the dealer unless you can find the one out of the truck.

Re: Help! Ford Ranger with missing ECU/PCM
The VIN shows it was bulit in 08/00, so I was guessing that this means August 2000.
Anyway, I am thinking of ringing a Ford dealer in Hawaii with the VIN to try to track down the correct part number. Does anyone know if I can have the ECM programmed away form the truck. There are no Ford dealers here in Samoa, so the only way I can get it done would be to fly a mechanic in from American Samoa, which will be pretty expensive. The guy it was purchased off says he has the equipment to make the keys work with the truck once the ECM is replaced, but he doesnt have the gear to program the ECM. If I understood the whole process from start to end, then I would probably be OK. But I dont have any experience with the Ford Ranger so any detailed help would be greatly appreciated.

This sounds like it is a very early 2001 model year Ranger. Plant changeover usually takes place in July/August of the summer before.
Any U.S. Ford dealer should be able to get the correct part number for the PCM based on the VIN. However, the part may or may not still be available new. To use a junkyard PCM, you must stay with the correct engine, transmission, drive. To make things even more complicated, some 3.0's were available as Flex Fuel Vehicles and these require a different PCM. FFV Rangers have a leaf emblem on the tailgate and a sticker inside the fuel door but the best check is the 8th character of the VIN ("V"=FFV 3.0, "U"=conventional 3.0)
The best bet, of course, is to source the PCM from a clone 2001 model with 3.0/manual/2WD and either FFV or non-FFV as the case may be. 2002/2003 3.0 Rangers are very similar to 2001 and may work as well but no guarantees.
After the correct PCM is in place, the engine still will not start until the PATS/Securilock system has been set up using a locksmith tool or dealer tool such as the NGS or WDS.

I think he means these:

Look for the label on the PCM which is located in a slot in the passenger side firewall. The code may also be found on a sticker near the passenger side fender (as shown) or elsewhere depending on the year. The code is 4 characters and varies based on the year, engine, transmission, drive, emissions region, etc. of your truck. In this example the code is GDM2; yours will probably be different:

Re: Help! Ford Ranger with missing ECU/PCM
This truck has had a respray, so no sticker is that location. Only one I saw was the photo I showed which is directly in front of the radiator. Will it make a huge problem without the code ?

Without the code, you will have to make sure that the donor is mechanically the same as noted in my previous post. Having the calibration code would be a plus because it would verify that the PCM chosen was the right one.
I believe that a Ford dealer can access the calibration number based on the VIN but it may be of a different form compared to the 4-character code shown in the photos above.

Re: Help! Ford Ranger with missing ECU/PCM
Got the part number today. So now just have to track down the PCM. Just included a picture to show what the old girl looks like. Thanks again for all the help so far. No doubt there will be more questions to come.

Re: Help! Ford Ranger with missing ECU/PCM
Was wondering if anyone out there could point me in the right direction in tracking down this PCM? I had a quote from the Ford Dealer in American Samoa for $885 US which is pretty steep, so I want to try to track down a used PCM. So far nothing showing up on ebay. I emailed a few places around the States and no hits so far.
The part number according to Ford is 1L5Z-12A650-JB
The VIN of the vehicle is 1FTYR10U81TA01186
2001 Ford Ranger Edge 3.0 litre V6 2 x 4 5 speed manual non flexi fuel?
Can anyone point me in a direction where I might possibly get a reasonably priced used PCM?
Thanks so much for your help so far

Re: Help! Ford Ranger with missing ECU/PCM
Here's one for $338 +100 core, so $438 plus shipping.
Plug in your part number here:
http://www.tascaparts.com/partlocato...&siteid=213668
I was at a "u-pull-it" type junkyard yesterday and the price for any PCM was $30. Unfortunately, they didn't have any trucks new enough that the PCM would work in your 2001.
