Exclamation question about moving/bending tranny cooler lines

im installing a new bumper on my truck and the cooler lines will hang below it. i want to trim the rubber hose as well as bend the metal lines upward at the angle that my finger is pointing but...

1- if the tranny fluid leaks can i just put in more or do i have to take it to someone?

2- is there any way the "kink" the lines as you would a garden hose to stop massive leaks while trimming and bending?

3- is this just a plain out bad idea?

Thanks for any input!
Chris

If you are wanting to bend the lines I would not bend the current ones. You need to get a new straight tube and bend it the way you want. As for kinking the line, it really isn't that much work to drain it and bending a new line might take a little while anyways. So basically, find a new straight tube the correct size, get a tube bender, drain your transmission fluid, remove the old pipe, bend to specifications you want, put everything back together, add fluid.

----------

Oh, and make sure you get a tube longer than what you think you might need. You can always trim some off at the end but you can't add on to it. Also, if you've never bent a tube you might want to get a piece to practice with.

well i was rethinking it, i was going to just cut off excess metal line about an inch past the plastic holder thing (just enough lenght to get the hose clamp on it), the shorten the flexable line so there is little to no slack, im trying to do this without draining the fluid becaus a friend told me that you have to take it to an auto shop because they have to put an exact amount in, and i dont want it to get messed up then blow my tranny for something as stupid as shortening the lines....

----------

and do you know if fluid is always running through the lines, or only when the truck is running?

The exact amount is like filling oil. Look at your tranny dipstick and there is low/full hashes and circles. Fill it with a little less than what your manual tells you, check the level, then fill as needed.

do you have room to push the line towards the engine, slightly bending in another location on the truck? do not kink the line, and watch for leaks you'll burn up the tranny quick only way to truly bend line is correct tools, or removing the line and filling it full of sand and capping the ends with tape, the sand will prevent kinks. but since your line is wet with fluid. I wldnt suggest it. be hard to get it all back out

tool, see if you can rent one at local parts store

ive decided im not going to bend it at all, just going to shorten it.... im guessing with a hack saw... then just shorten the flex line so theres very little slack...

its going to be exposed with the new bumper im putting on so i want to shorten it so it doesnt get snagged on something on a trail...

gotcha, trans has fair amount of pressure, sure hack it off right behind the bend where you finger is.....I suggest using a flaring tool, slightlty flare the end of the metal tube, if it does hit anything, wont pull the rubber line off
