Okay no lie you can put them in backwards, but you have one side with 2 inlets. guys at the shop put the single inlet ones in backwards all the time. just saying.

I agree with you the guy that removed his fuel filter is an idiot ......however that being said I have a 2006 Pontiac vibe/toyota matrix and it does not have an inline fuel filter. I think it has some kind of sock/screen on the pump in the tank........

yeah thats not uncommon for them to be in the tank with the fuel pump. thats how some of the dodges are too.

Which that set up is still a filter. Regardless if it is a in tank filter or in line filter they all have one.

Maybe people wouldn't call you an idiot if you didn't do things to your truck that could ruin it for what you believe is more mpg, when in reality the difference, if any, would be so small that you wouldn't even notice. It's okay though because there's no way the person who got gas before you could have dropped the pump on the ground and gotten sand or anything else on it.
