I have a 99 ford ranger 3.0L 2WD auto with 142k miles on it. What oil filter is best to use? What oil should I use? 10w/30, etc?

Also, It's always had regular oil in it, can I switch to syntheic high mileage without problems?

in mine i use fram filters and the walmart supertech oil in the 5w30 weight. i haven't had any problems since new . the truck now has 44,680 miles on it and it's an '04
i've left the truck set and idle for 2 hours at fire calls and haven't had any issue's yet.

What is the type of filter? (model number)

Also can I switch to syntheic high mileage even though it never has?

I have a 2003 FX4 LVL II. I run the K&N Oil Filter 2010 part number for the 4.0L and I have used Castrol GTX, then SYNTEC Blend, then SYNTEC, and now for the past 3 changes I've used Royal Purple. I am running Royal Purple as all of my lubricants and I absolutely love it. After switching even from the Castrol SYNTEC to Royal Purple I noticed a major difference in how well the truck performed and maintains that performance throughout the life of the Oil. Although Royal Purple is on the pricey end of things I'm able to run around 7-8k miles on it in between changes. Although in South Texas I will be limiting my mileage to every 6k miles due to the excessive heat and the Deep Sand driving I have been doing on the National Seashore. I hope this helps.

I run mobil 1 and the motorcraft 400ls filter. Buy both at walmart. The motorcraft is a ford part and is usually cheaper than the fram which has a questionable quality. 97,000 and still going strong.

They say you can switch at any time to synthetic.

Alright, the last thing I would want to do is run my truck going to synthetic. That would just suck.

There are no issues going synthetic at any time. I may eventually switch it up, but right now I just use the Mortorcraft blend oil and Motorcraft filters.

How many quarts does it take?

I would recommend ensuring you have flushed the case properly. The run any basic oil filter, changed at every change. Oil I would never go lower than 10w30, infact I would stay there. I would avoid synthetic for monetary purpouses, aside unless you are dragging you truck or running sprints then you'll do fine with standard oil. I recommend GTX, it is a good oil. I do know there are high miler oils out ther that are supposed to have conditioners in them, but am not familiar with any results of them improving 10year old baked 140kmls valve seals. I would put one pint of marvelous mystery oil in for 500 miles and then and then drain 1 qt. and replace with lucas.
this should cover all your bases. and if you are unfamiliar with this truck, I would recommend putting a half pint of 2 cycle into your full gas tank.

I have a couple of oil questions myself.

I have a 2WD 2005 Ranger with a 2.3L, 4 cylinder engine. I have a little over 106k miles on it and was wonder what type of oil I should be using? 5W-20/5W-30/10W-30?? Does the climate matter?
