I have a couple of oil questions myself.
I have a 2WD 2005 Ranger with a 2.3L, 4 cylinder engine. I have a little over 106k miles on it and was wonder what type of oil I should be using? 5W-20/5W-30/10W-30?? Does the climate matter?

Hi cheez-it
Pretty sure every one else is talking about v6 rangers. I have an 05 duratec 2.3 as well, I run 0w20 mobile 1 AFE (advanced fuel economy) after I read up about it on Bob is the oil guy
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...Number=2187412
I'm doing 10k mile oil changes, and no problems so far (though I learned I burn a quart of oil every 10k miles, I could barely tell when I was doing 5k oil changes.)
Make sure you use a better oil filter, I pick up the fram extended guard one at Walmart along with the oil.

Yes, climate can matter, but all extremes aside, the owner's manual is your friend. The manufacturer would know what to use, and most newer vehicles call for 5W 20.

Thanks for the input. And thats why I asked because I have a 4 cylinder. So do you think I should switch to 0W20 because of my high mileage? I read that link you posted as well and didnt understand what they were talking about. I would love to change my oil every 10k instead or every 3k miles. And I always get a good oil filter because if you get good oil and a crappy filter, whats the point. Haha.

Yeah I looked at the owners manual and it states 5W20 for 2.3L vehicles but my truck isnt really that new and has high mileage on it so I'm trying to figure out what to use.

I won't tell you to switch to 0w or not, that's something you gotta decide for yourself haha. FYI I've got more miles on mine, I'm at 140k right now. The guys on that site I linked are soooooooper anal/interested in oil and send a sample to a lab before and after an oil change. This way they can verify that no bearings or anything else in their motor is wearing prematurely, and can also make sure the oil after 10k miles still has the lubrication specs it had when it was fresh.
It will of course vary by engine, but I figured I do a lot of highway driving and was OK with taking that guys oil analysis as a general rule for my truck as well. I'm in Arizona, and while its a bit cold here right now (20f at night sometimes) I ran the same oil in the summer too as well without issues.

Interesting. Regardless thanks for the info and ideas. I will talk to some mechanics and see what they say. I don't do that much highway driving and its more stop and go for me. I live in So Cal.... traffic. Haha. But again, thanks for the knowledge you dropped.

Yea no problem. While I enjoy researching stuff, i think its fair to say that fresh oil and filter changed regularly is good, and oil weights at or near the OEM specification is probably good too :-)
I used to live in Santa Monica, I feel ya. Traffic sucks.

Bob is the oil guy does have a great forum. Kendall semi synthetic is a great oil and works well with the motorcraft filter. ConocoPhillips makes both Kendall and motorcraft oil as well.

If the factory uses break in oil it's not a good idea to use synthetic for the first 15000 miles. Rings don't seat properly. After that go for it, you wont be sorry. If you have an older truck that has some leaks, synthetic will leak more. Fix any leaks than go for it.
