Default OBD I (pre-1996) CEL?

did OBD I use a CEL (Check Engine Light)? I don't see one on my dash when I start my truck (1995 2WD 4cyl). My understanding is that it should light up for a few seconds, just so I can see that the bulb is working.

But I *should* have a CEL. The PO (garage) said he replaced a few of the lights in the dash... Must have "conveniently forgotten" that one. Now I wonder what kind of stuff is wrong with my truck that I don't know about.

Yes, there is a CEL light on the dash, and it should come on, probably a burned out bulb, or no bulb.

1995 Rangers are OBDII.

OBDII was required by law on LDVs in 96 but Ford started the phase-in process with a few 94 models. Rangers got it along with a few other Fords in the 95 model year. There is an OBDII Data Link Connector under the column and a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (aka CEL) in the cluster. You'll need an OBDII reader to access codes.

That won't be of any use in a 95 Ranger because it's OBDII.

as a rule obd-ii started in 1996. I think some 95 rangers have the obd-ii conector . especially CA trucks..........

the bulb is probably burnt out. you can still read codes with the light out.........do you have the obd-ii connector or the obd-i setp in the engine compartment

All 1995 Rangers are OBDII, California or otherwise.

I still haven't pulled my dash apart yet to fix my CEL. It needs plugs and wires first. I don't need my CEL to know that it's been misfiring. But I would like to have it just in case there's some other problem. Is there a "taking your dash / gauges apart" walk-through anywhere?

as you probably know even if the CEL is burnt out you can still read the codes ........reading the codes is always a good idea before you do anything...... I understand that you are going to replace the plugs and wires........you did not ask but let me suggest that Motorcraft or Autolite plugs and wires are the consensus best choice for your engine.......and since you seem to have just gotten the truck let me also suggest that your replace the fuel filter and check the rear leaf-spring shackles and hangers......they rust out........

May I also suggest that you create a detailed profile/signature of your truck....the signature/profile will show up on every post it really helps the Members DX your truck......especially people that might be looking at the thread from a phone?

Default Re: OBD I (pre-1996) CEL?

I used Autolite standard plugs and Prestolite wires, bought at CARQUEST (used to work there... the all-caps is the standard for typing the name, I'm not shouting lol). Already had a shackle fail, and have replaced both of the rears. The fronts are newer than stock, already on there when I got it (bonus!).

As for info on my truck: I have the following in my sig: "1995 2.3L 2WD 5 speed {extra leaf springs, 15" wheels, aftermarket lead foot, stock rust and other broken parts}" Do you have any suggestions as to what to add? I really don't know what's relevant. I guess I could add that it just rolled 160k miles and it's running much much better with the new plugs. They were all Motorcraft with platinum (overkill for this engine) plugs and Motorcraft wires. Maybe never changed? 160k seems like a long time, even for platinum plugs. Anyway, I ended up breaking a couple of the old wires taking them off, and one plug was actually physically failing (the ceramic was loose and wobbling around). Next up is to do the zip-ties on the throttle cable trick, since I found out yesterday that there's a good inch of slack in mine.

Haven't done the fuel or air filter yet, I'll probably do that in a couple thousand miles when the oil's due. As for the CEL: I found a walk through for the gauges on Ranger Station. Pretty comprehensive with pics and everything. So that's coming up. I'll have a friend read the codes, but I really want the light to work so I know it's doing its job. I'll be pissed if I open it up and the bulb is missing, sine the PO (Previous Owner - mechanic I bought it from) said he replaced a bunch of bulbs in the dash, and that'll mean he left that one out on purpose, since the '95 model year isn't a mandatory OBD-II scan for inspection in NY, but if the light was on, then they'd have scanned it.

Oh I won't like that at all. I can feel my inner Sicilian boiling up already. Hope there's no wrenches nearby for me to throw at him!
