Default "Check Engine Light" again. Questions

I posted about a month ago about this problem as well.

My check engine light came on again. The first time it came on the oil was pretty low, I put a quart and a half in. Reset it.

Came on again, about 100 miles later. Replaced oil and filter, Reset it.

Now 192 miles later, it has come on again. So it probably has nothing to do with the oil, I guess.

My questions are

1. How often (mileage) does the system "scan" itself?

2. Given the mileage which the the check engine light came on, does that give me any clues about what the problem could be?

Once again there has been no difference in performance or mileage, so far. The only thing I can think of is going in and paying for the diagnostics at a repair shop.

Thanks for any help.

Go to Autozone and they'll scan the code(s) for free. They will provide their code definition, but you can post the code(s) here and someone will give you Ford's defintion.

The CEL has nothing to do with oil. Which is why the light keeps coming back on. You haven't fixed the condition causing the light to come on. The only way is to have the codes read. Most autopart stores will do this for you. Until you do that, and tell us what you're driving, there is nothing anyone can tell you.

Unfortunately, I live in California where the laws don't let the auto parts stores run those checks anymore. I've tried a few places, same answer. "We can't do that anymore".

It's a 2001

Ok, then buy a cheap code reader and do it yourself. Either way, it could mean 100 things and we can't tell you what it is without the code. Also, "Its a 2001" doesn't tell us jack. Don't be lazy.

Seriously? You asked this question in the last thread you started about this last month. People told you what to do and gave you advice. You ignored it. People here have asked you for information which you've ignored.

Go to the autopart store and buy a code reader. Put some information in your signature about your truck. Until then, just like the last time you asked about the same problem, there is nothing we can do.

I rush things sometimes, just nervous about my truck I guess. Sorry for being a lazy, but to the best of my ability I listed what type of truck I have.

Today the light went off by itself, thoughts? Thanks.

Without the codes were just guessing and you'll be throwing money at the problem replacing suspected parts. Get a scanner or have someone scan it. I know AAMCO will scan it and tell you what the problem is. You don't have to have them fix it, but we need codes.

Alright, codes. I was just wondering if anyone knew why it would turn off. Or even a guess.

I had a 90 bronco bii with a 2.9 that did the same thing. Light would come on and then go off later. I did the same as you reading all types of threads looking for solutions. I replaced a lot of parts to no avail. I had codes but it was a obd1 system with limited feedback. It ended up being 02sensors. Yours is an obdII system and the codes are a lot more specific. It could be any number of things, that is why getting the codes is so important.

It could be a midget leprechaun stuck in the intake manifold singing the creepy Russian tololol song while tap dancing in bunny slippers and a too-too smoking a cigarette throwing off the oxygen levels in the air flow.

My thought remains GET A CODE READER or stop being impatient. Pick one.
