Default Ranger AC controls

I have owned three Rangers, 96,97,and my present 98. With all these trucks, when the ac controls are on max ac, that is what you get. Max cold, with no temp control. You have to go to outside air to vary the temperature. On Explorers, however, you can control the temperature on Max. Is it possible to do a converesion with Explorer parts to have temperature control on Max on a Ranger? Scruffybeast

You should have change in temperature. Your blend door should still work when you turn the temperature knob.

The reason you probably don't see a difference is because on MAX A/C the heater core is shut off. So there shouldn't be any way for warm air to come out.

It should go from ice cold to just cold.

Thanks for the reply. It sounds logical. My question is why do Explorers not operate the same way. Perhaps the explorer just goes to only recirculate but still allows water flow through the heater core. I work at a Ford dealer as a driver, but the guys there say that they have no answer. Some say that my Ranger should have temp control on Max. I have owned two Rangers and a B3000 Mazda, and they all opereated in the same fashion. The difference in mode function must go further than the manual controls, because they appear to be identical, even to the part numbers. No big deal, but sometimes it would be nice to be able to control the temperature while in recirculate mode, to avoid drawing in outside air at a time when it stinks, as when you are near a diesel which is spewing smoke, or a car that is running so rich that it fouls the air around it and you end up sucking it in.
Hope someone else has wondered about the possibility of modifying a Ranger to work like an Explorer in this respect. Scruffybeast

I would unplug the vacuum line to the heater core (it closes under vacuum) and cap off the line ( you can buy a pack of vinyl caps at a local autoparts place for like 2 bucks). Then run your vehicle and turn it to max a/c. You should be able to feel heat coming out when the temp control is turned all the way to the red. This could be a way of doing it. Now if this doesn't work then I would think you have a problem with your blend door actuator.

BTW from what I've examined on Explorers the have the same vacuum line to the heater core as the recirculation valve/actuator. You can see this T by dropping the glove box. Open the glove box and push in the sides to drop the door down. You should see the actuator to your right. If you look at the vacuum line under it it has a T near it and that comes from the A/C controls (after going to the panel vents actuator) in the radio bezel, and the other line goes out to the heater core through the firewall (you can see two lines going through the firewall). One is the vacuum supply for the whole system, other is the heater control valve line. From all the dashes I've pulled from Explorers they all usually have this Teed line. Just like the Rangers.
