Question Is there an easy way to find check engine codes?

Hi All, I just bought a 2000 3.0 5-speed 2WD and the check engine light is on.
Is there an easy way to find out what the trouble codes are without hooking up a code reader?
On my 2002 Grand Cherokee, I can turn the ignition on and off three times and then the check engine light flashes out a trouble code that I can look up online.
Is there anything similiar that I can do on my Ranger?

Thanks
David
