rear drum brake photos and questions

Hi everyone,
first of all I'd like to apologize for flooding this forum with questions over the past couple days and bleeding you dry of your knowledge but I really would like some insight as I do my drum brakes.

let me recap my progress,
I went to buy the parts at Northshore auto parts and realized I didn't know if I had 9inch or 10 inch drums. I went home to check and couldn't find a measuring tape so I measured using an extention arm of my ratchet set then went into the auto shop and measured the extention arm....However, I made a mistake (I just measured properly tonight) and I have 9inch instead of 10 inch. Oh well, gotta go back there anyway.

I think my drums are no good because there's bumpy ridges on the inside so I guess i gotta replace them. I figured out my wheel cylinder is 13/16 inlet size and I managed to unstick my brake line to remove the cylinder.

Tomorrow I'm going to go exchange the parts, get drums, and a drum hardware kit.

So questions,
What is the wings shaped part that's sitting on the piece above where the wheel cylinder sits in the first photo?

What is that part in the second photo?

the third photo is obviously parking brake something...what is it's function and how does it mount to the shoe?

1st Anchor Pin Plate
2nd Adjuster Lever

(A), the Adjusting Cable eye
(B) the Anchor Pin Plate
(C). If you bought the hardware kit, the springs can be disposed but keep the adjusting cable and anchor plate.

At your work bench, remove the retaining clip (C) that holds the Secondary Brake Shoe (A) and the Parking Brake Actuating Lever (B) together. I found it very difficult to remove without destroying it. You should have a new one in your hardware kit, but my kit came with only one new retaining clip but an extra shoe retaining clip.

In your last photo of the brake pad and Parking Brake Actuating Lever, what is the little pin/bolt with wire wrapped around it used for?

I realized I need the self adjuster cable as well.

sheesh, these brakes are HOOPED! lol, just the one side though. the other side will be MUCh easier to work on I hope

Take pics as you go. It will help do the other side and ease in reassembly.

Also, i noticed in a few photos people putting jack stands under the rear suspension? is that safe? I have trouble getting my truck jacked high enough with the jack and stands I have lol.

Always u jack stand u never know when the hydraulic jack will fail

That pin with wire I think was the adjuster deal

Yeah I use jack stands but I was wondering about placement, I was putting themunder teh frame a foot or so in front of the wheel but putting them under the rear leafs sounds more appealing to me.

Just place them here on the axle (marked in red)

Use the jack to jack in the center under the diff housing

IMO I would rather change 30 cars disc brake over 1 drum set

Drum brakes suck disc brake you can do in about 10 minutes.
