Default Check engine light after new intake installed

is there anyway to "remap" the computer on my 2000 4.0 ranger? i installed an intake a couples weeks ago and i have a check engine light come on everytime i stomp on the gas. ill go home clear it, and the next time i put the pedal to the floor it comes on. if i drive like a grandma and never put the pedal more than 3/4 throttle it never comes on, its just when i stomp on it the light comes on... obd2 says engine running too lean bank 1 and 2, i assume its thinking the motor is getting too much air intake, from the mass air flow sensor.. i could be wrong, any ideas please help.

What kind of intake? Your own obd2? Codes 171 and 174? I don't have the definition for those codes but talk to a mechanic, they should be able to help you out. Hey, try the obd2 website that might help.

Sweet jesus.

171 and 174 means the 1HO2S are seeing a leaner mixture than expected, and the KAM is being adjusted to richen the fuel map.

I am assuming it is doing this under load only, and the non-loaded (idle portion) of your map is not being scaled.

You can verify this by watching your fuel trims go positive (more than 10%) by viewing live fuel trim data.

I concur with the idea that for some reason your MAF is reading less flow than is actually going past. You can also view MAF flow volumes via obd2.

If the intake has a wider cross section at the MAF itself you will need to scale it. I did this on my IX because I have a much bigger intake than stock (due to a large turbo upgrade)

Just to let you know, you wasted your money if the intake is the only thing you plan on doing. Many intakes cause turbulent flow near the MAF due to poor research and design, causing troubles running, and idling. MAF sensors are designed for laminar flow only, not turbulent flow. If I were you I would log the MAF flow values with a tactrix cable and plot them against your throttle position sensor and rpm value to see is something funky is going on.

I built a 1100HP subaru and had this exact problem. I needed to fabricate an intake for the EZ30 H6 engine as it does not come in the GC8 Impreza.

thank you for the help!!!! lemme ask you this... i understand all of what you said and dont want to seem stupid for asking, but what are the failure rate on these MAF in the fords? is it possible that just the MAF is just bad? AND does anyone with a K&N Intake have this problem?! thanks again!

Oh, I don't really know but I have a 2.3 and a 3.0 (different mafs) and mine work great. If you (or anyone else) need the newer 3.0 style maf, I have a bunch of them (Brand new) They are modular parts used in many fords, not just rangers - If I thought I had a bad maf I'd swap it with a buddies, or try cleaning it with maf cleaner. If you contaminated it, it will act like its broken.

EDIT - see you have a 4.0 - don't know if the 3.0 sensor and the 4.0 sensor are the same???

Another EDIT: Not that this is totally relevant, but the K&N intakes that fit on the stock Evo Turbo's also cause this same problem. I do have a K&N filter on my Evo but I also built my own intake for it (out of stainless steel) and this is because I need the bigger filtering surface with a HTA3076R turbo - I have a 5" intercooler and a vented hood to cool down my charge

If his maFs wasn't plugged in it more than likely would run terrible, if it ran at all.
