Oh, I don't really know but I have a 2.3 and a 3.0 (different mafs) and mine work great. If you (or anyone else) need the newer 3.0 style maf, I have a bunch of them (Brand new) They are modular parts used in many fords, not just rangers - If I thought I had a bad maf I'd swap it with a buddies, or try cleaning it with maf cleaner. If you contaminated it, it will act like its broken.
EDIT - see you have a 4.0 - don't know if the 3.0 sensor and the 4.0 sensor are the same???
Another EDIT: Not that this is totally relevant, but the K&N intakes that fit on the stock Evo Turbo's also cause this same problem. I do have a K&N filter on my Evo but I also built my own intake for it (out of stainless steel) and this is because I need the bigger filtering surface with a HTA3076R turbo - I have a 5" intercooler and a vented hood to cool down my charge
