you have to remove the rubber boot that covers the inner tie rod and use an adjustable wrench to get it off. its super easy to do.

heres a couple pics of an emergency inner tie rod repair i did last winter. they make a special socket to remove the inner tie rod but an adjustable wrench also works, as does a pipe wrench but we only used that bacause thats all we had.

Question Re: how to get at those tie rods?

I need a right front tie rod replaced before I can get an alignment...bought a tie-rod. The shop said it would be $162 in labor to put it on cause they had to do something with the steering rod or something like that I don't remember what he said exactly....but my appointment isn't till next Tuesday. Is that task just as easy on my '02?

I replaced both sides inner/outer tie rods and shocks. Much better. The inners ended up being easy(hopefully I got them tight enough with the rental tool) and the boot was no problem. My alignment was way out of whack afterwards though
