Steering wheel has lots of play in it???
Steering wheel has lots of play in it??? I can turn my steering wheel about 4 inches before i get any response in steering i know this happens in lots of older rangers but what causes it i was wondering? and can it be fixed?

Wow! that's a lot of play.
You can take out some by an adjustment at the steering box.
But! that is so much it is probably a safety issue and you need to check it out thoroughly.

Does your truck have power steering or just manual? Manual steering tends to have more play that power steering does, a lot more play.

My guess is going to be that you need new tie-rods maybe?

could be a few things mentioned like tie rods, pitman arm or drag link you might also want to check for excessive free play in the steering box... im not sure when it comes to passenger cars and trucks but with big trucks ( tractor-trailers ) more than 2 or 3 inches is excessive.

Yeah, then you have an issue. Do you have a steering box or rack and pinion steering? There is a lot more to look at with a box. Rack and pinion, you are looking at tie rod ends or a new rack.
