Flashing glow plug light

Had my Ranger for a few months now and slowly sorting through the 'niggles'. Current one is no glow plug illumination on the dash when ignition is switched on. Removed the instrument panel to check the lamp only to discover it was missing! Grrrrrr....... so fitted one only to discover that it starts flashing when engine has warmed up??? trawled the internet and discovered shorting out between 'ten' and 'gnd' shows a flashing fault code on the glow plug light on the dash. Code would appear to be 1189 and i believe this to be a 'pump speed signal fault' however there is no performance issues and if i had not discovered the lamp was removed i would never have know. Any advice please???? I would prefer to fix the fault but how???? Thanks

We'll have to wait for a European owner to answer. We don't have the diesel option in the U.S.

Ok doke, An update. Removed the plug connection to the speed sensor and measured its resistance. I found this to be 1.5K ohms and thought that about right so I then removed the speed sensor (watch out tho cause sensor sits in a fuel bath so you do loose some fuel when sensor removed but thats why you have ten fingers!) I found the sensor had a light covering of rust coloured debris on its tip so cleaned it off and refitted it and so far there is NO FLASHING GLOW PLUG LIGHT!!!!! Woo Hoo!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully I have fixed the 'fault' but i will give it a few more trips before i clear the fault memory but fingers crossed!.............. Now all i need is to sort out the brakes..............................

Pics to follow, waiting for a decent day (not much around in Scotland currently!) and hopefully some snow. Flashing light back unfortunately but it lasted about 30-40 miles before returning. I removed the sensor and cleaned it again and light has once again gone!? Think i will order a new sensor and fit it as was pretty clean this time......... will keep everyone upto date.............And post some pics soon! Lol.

Andy. I have the same problem. It started intermittently about a week after I bought my truck. It used to stop if I turned off the ignition for a minute but now flashing on all the time once warmed up. Where did you find the sensor you cleaned? This light drives me mad plus mine leaves a thick black smoke screen which is pretty embarrassing!

Hi Foxxy. The fuel pump speed sensor is on the side of the fuel pump and is connected with a two pin electrical connector. Disconnect this and its a 22mm spanner to unscrew the sensor itself. Best put a rag in the hole once the sensor is removed to stop to much diesel coming out. Good luck hope this helps.

Hi Andy. Took the sensor out and it was clean as a new pin, looked brand new! Gave it a wipe over anyway but there was no change, light still flashes and still have the smoke screen!
Any other ideas I could try?

Hi Foxxy. Best thing to do would be to find out what the actual fault code is. This is done by shorting out two 'pins' in the grey diagnostic box (top r/h corner of the engine compartment looking in from the radiator) this will give you a series of flashes on the glow plug light that will reflect a fault code. My Ranger is ideal but it so hard to find out info on it?! Everything i have found out has been through google or just taking it to bits. Lol. Hope this helps.

p.s. Glad the sensor is ok as ford want £400 + for a new one!!!!! Aaaargh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum is the biggest pile of crap ever, fitting for the Ford Ranger which is also a pile of crap.
All I want to do is ask a question for some technical help but it's impossible. what the hell is this site actually for???
I have a 2004 diesel Ranger with a problem that no-one can help with!
Ford say they can't help cos it's a Mazda engine, Mazda don't want to know cos it's a Ford badged vehicle and all the parts, despite being Mazda parts will have Ford numbers so they can't help!!!!!!!
WHAT CRAZY FOOL CAME UP WITH THIS CRAP??????????????
I've taken the stupid thing to an independant diesel specialist who diagnosed the fault as either a faulty crank sensor OR a faulty injector pump speed sensor, but they can't determine which! Either way it's gonna cost about £300 to tell me which it is and then an astronomical, undeterminable amount to put right!!!! All because of a flashing glow plug lamp!!! It'd be cheaper to scrap the thing despite spending £5k on it less than a year ago!!!!!
