Default Towing with a 97 XLT

My last post fell victim to the break down and recovery yesterday. An admins job is never done. Keep up the good work!

I have a 2.3L 97 XLT 5 speed. The manual says I can tow 1,300 pounds which is great because my buddies boat and trailer is around 1,000 pounds.

I looked, briefly, under my truck bed but don't see a wiring harness/connection for a trailer. I did find the harness that supplies power to the license plate lamps and the brake light assemblies.

My question: is there a harness to find or do I need to make some modifications? If I need something what is it and where can I find it?

Thanks in advance for any advice/help,

What rear axle do you have? You will need that to make sure you can really tow. For example, my rear axles is geared too high to tow where as with a 3.73:1 I could tow.

For the trailer wires, they sell a harness adaptor that plugs right into the wire harness right behind and to the driver's side the spare tire.

sgtsandman,

The first thing I did was check the manual and window sticker - I inherited this truck from my Dad. It has a 3.73:1 rear differential it also has the Splash Sport suspension package.

Thanks for the information, I'll order the harness.
