Default Replace fuel filler tube on 1997 XLT

Hi all,

I was hoping someone here could give me a pointer or two on replacing the Fuel Filler tube assembly on my newly acquired 1997 XLT.

I'm experiencing the common fuel leak just as the gas pump shuts off. After the filler tube is emptied the leak stops.

I've read on other forums, before I found this one, some people drop the tank while others remove the entire truck bed. There has got to be a better way.

I have the standard fleetside 6 foot bed.

Thanks in advance.

Best thing to do is take the bed off to get best access to the tank. put on new filler hose. Then put bed back onand attach the fillerhose back to the underside of the filler door using the three screws.

The bed comes off with 6 (mine did) T55 Star Bolts. Also, unclip the taillight harness right under the tailgate and unscrew the three filler hose screws. Then have three or four peeps lift the bed off (its heavy trust me ive done it)

take off old filler hose, attach new one and put the bed back on in reverse order

Thanks for the fast reply.

Unfortunately I don't have three or four people to help. I seem to be friends with a series of slackers with bad backs. I'll have to employ the old block and tackle. Good idea to wash it while the bed is off. Thanks again.

HA! I tried replacing a fuel pump and sending unit by dropping the tank in my '93. I couldn't even break the skid plate bolts loose. The bed came off. Me and one other guy lifted the bed off easily. It's not that heavy...2 will do to lift it off.

A guy posted on a forum he simply loosened the hose clamps on the tank side, removed the three screws at the top flange, then pulled it straight out and replaced it the same way. I was hoping to find someone here to confirm that method. I don't mind working hard but working smarter not harder has it's merits.

dixie_boysles - your link gave me an error sating no results were found.

Dan, I have been able to remove my filler neck without taking off the bed or the gas tank, it just takes some tight angles, but you can do it. I had to do it on my driveway, but if you have access to a lift, it would be a big help.

Have you found a new filler neck yet? When I was searching, it seemed to be a dealer only item.

I did, $35 on Ebay. It's supposed to be here next week. I'll look up the link later if you need it.

Thanks for the info.

New Filler Tube arrived yesterday. Now to install the thing before I need to refuel.

If anyone needs a new Filler Tube here is where I bought it. It arrived in only three or four days. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWNX%3AIT

Fuel filler tube installed! I didn't have to remove the truck bed or the gas tank. I did need a smaller set of arms to tighten the tank clamp, he is about half my size so he could get his hands into the tight spaces.

Thanks for all your help.

Dixie has it right, I have done it also....My friend and I lifted and pulled back the bed enough to rest the bed on the rear wheels. That gave me the room to do what I needed to do. It shouldn't take longer than a six pack to complete the job...LOL

i just replaced mine the other day. if you dont have an extra set of hands, you can unbolt the bed and just lift the one side up and prop it up with something. i used a block of wood and the put my small floor jack in there and jacked it up.

I did the same as meyer169.

Unbolted the bed. Lifted it up and my son put put a temp. 2x4 support under the fender. Put the jack on the frame rail. Jacked it up a little more. Put a safety chock under the bed.

Whole thing may have taken an hour. No need to remove the bed. Plenty enough room to work by lifting hose side.

I love this site! So much information that helps cut dealer costs. I just had a fuel pump issue. Dealer cost $800. I got them down to $430 and I supplied the fuel pump assembly (Advanced Auto). BUT, then they called me and strongly "recommended" I replace the fuel filler neck while they had already dropped the fuel tank....$375. I told them no, and this site is exactly why. I can do it and you all just provided me the how to.
Also, I recommend Rockauto.com or 1aauto.com. And believe it or not, I found a fuel filler neck, spectra premium, same on Advance Auto has, on Amazon.com for $80 less.
I love this site. Thanks to you all for helping guys like me.

meyer169 -- I just saw where you replaced the fuel filler hose on your Ranger. My 97 has the same style bed. Where did you get the part and do you have the part #? I want to make sure I get the right part the first time.
