could it be a front driveshaft going bad?
on my moms 4.0 explorrer we had a problem similar to that and it ended up being that we had new tires on the back and almost bald ones on the front. this made a big difference in the size of the tires (about 1.5 inches every revolution) and the transfer case could not make up the difference all the time.
