Bronco
http://saskatoon.kijiji.ca/c-cars-ve...AdIdZ217691775
I have been looking for a 4x4 that will seat more people and also for the wife.
Think this is what I may settle on but am curious about motor.
I would like to swap out for a newer 4.0 and transmission.
How new can I go and would i be better off having this motor rebuilt?
Thanks and sorry for non ranger question.

Re: Bronco
87 is probably carbureated with an old style electric ignition which is basically a distributer without points so idk how well a 4.0l would go in there i would just use the strait six its a very strong motor for torque it will out pull a 302 any day any fairly easy to do a new gasket change on it

Re: Bronco
I think the 300 was a great engine. Don't know about it having a C6 tranny. That's a 3speed auto. Had a C6 in my '78 F-250. Gas mileage might suck.

Re: Bronco
That thing needs a 351w.. Should bolt to that C6 trans, I beleve the 300 was a Windsor bell.
I would stick with pre-96 OBD-I, but it's still going to be a lot of wiring work. Guess that answer is depending on what you can deal with. Think the 4.0L might be a bit small for that truck, but that's just my opinion.
Wouldn't advise to rebuild the 300 as it's a gas hog and that C6 is a power hog (double whammy) also. Though that setup is pretty bullet proof.

I have heard good things about the 300 so far but have been told they are hard on head gaskets.
I have 6mos so plenty of time for a rebuild, but if its gonna be a gas hog may need to reconsider.
Dont mind engine swap but dont really want to change all the wiring..
Would have preferred a standard as this will be wifes winter emerg. truck and a trail truck also.
She will just use when 4x4 is needed.
Really want a bronco but may end up with a 4runner...

Re: Bronco
The 300 is a great engine, but it's pretty much an engine for work. A 351w in that Bronco would be a good match for that C6, they have gobs of low end torque. Should be pretty strait forward to get the motor mounts. EFI is perferred for offroad, if it were a street machine I'd suggest just going with a carb. But EFI 351w isn't going to be much different than a 4.0L swap, and with the 4.0L swap you're looking at swapping transmission, making custom motor mounts, etc. About the same as a 5.0L swap in a Ranger.. 351w might just bolt right in place with the right pieces.

Re: Bronco
I don't know if the 351 Windsor (small block) will bolt up to that tranny, if you plan on keeping it. The 351 Modified (and 400M) will for sure bolt up to it though. That's the set up my '78 F-250 had. It was a beast (hope it still is, where ever it is these days)...

The 351M/400M is a big block bellhousing, with the exception that I think some rare 400s had the windsor bellhousing. Just checked and the I6 300ci does utilize the Windsor bellhousing, same as the 302/351W. Even the 3.8L RWD engine uses this bell housing - I am using a '91 3.8L S/C AOD behind my 5.0L.
For fuel mileage, I would steer clear of the 351M/400M. They are also a lot bigger in comparison. They have retarded cam timing and generally not a good choice unless you have money to drop into it IMO. 351W aftermarket is greater and cheaper..
As far as EFI, just need to find the engine, auto computer, and the wiring harness. Would be nice to have something to pick parts off of. If it was carbbed to start with, going to need an electric pump for the Bronco. Then get EVTMs for both vehicles and wire it up. Or another alernative would be an aftermarket EFI system, but those can get pricey. Or could just run a carb...
My bro had a 6 300 in a F150 with a manual transmission and the mileage wasn't great. Ended up buying a little Ranger.
