Anyone have advice on how to troubleshoot the temperature gauge on a 1991 2x4/2.3l. Doesn't move. Stuck on 'cold'. Would be nice if someone who knows their way around this could explain best procedure.

Did you get an answer to this? try searching "temperature gauge". there is a post entitled "Temperature Gauge not registering" posted by Taz on 4/16/2009. It has a fix that may be just what you need.
