Default No heat

My Ranger has no heat. My Ranger is an 07 Sport Regular Cab 2wd, 3.0L, standard shift, 42k miles, never abused, never off-road. I have a factory repair manual on this truck and I have gotten this down to a couple things. About the problem, I haven't ran the heat since winter, its been a hot one this year in AL! Rangers are notorious for having really hot scalding heat. Well mine has stopped working. When the temp knob is placed in the 'warm' or 'red' position, and the blend knob is in the 'floor only' position like the manual says to test, there is only cool air, no heat whatsoever. The manuals test says that it could be either A) Air Blend Door stuck or actuator not working; or B) Heater Control Valve. Anyone experienced this before and have any tips? I'm sure all this stuff can't be as easy as the manual states. I didn't get time to look at this during this past weekend, but I hope to get it nailed down in a couple of days. I do have plenty of time before it gets cold though before I will actually need it.

The typical blend door failure results in it defaulting to heat. The plastic around the linkage on the door cracks and it will fail to heat. If your problem is centered around the blend door, it would be a problem with the servo and that's most likely a wiring or plug that is busted or loose.

The valve is what shuts off the flow of coolant to the heater core in OFF an MAX AC. It is vacuum operated, but i forget whether it fails to open or closed on loss of vacuum.

Well yesterday I popped the hood and turned the knob over to 'hot' to see if the coolant lines to the heater core get hot. Well they get hot just like the book says, and they get really really hot!! Hahaha! I felt of the bottom of the plastic casing where the bottom of the heater core would be and that felt hot too. So, I know its getting hot, but, no hot air coming out of any vents. So next thing, air blend door/actuator. I will take pics of my progress and post them so everyone can see how this is done.

Ok its fixed,

Had one night after school of fog and cold, almost had to stick my head out the window to see for the 2 mile trip home.....had to fix it.

It turned out to be the Blend Door Actuator, its a small white box that sits just on top of the heater core plastic housing. You can see it when you lower the glove box all the way down. (press in on the sides of the glove box door to release each side from its keepers) There are 3 small 8mm bolts that are just a real pain to get to, I had to get an adjustable 8mm ratcheting wrench to get them out. Then its just a matter of unplugging the old one and pulling or prying straight up on the module to get it out then the installation is just the reverse of removal. There isn't much room in there, if you have small hands like me, this shouldn't be a problem, if not, I would suggest finding someone with small hands to do this project. Don't force anything, this module seems to be breakable to me. I actually had to plug the module in before reinstalling it and using the hot/cold knob to line up the actuator door with the actuator shaft so it would just fall into place. Works perfectly now!! BTW-I found out the hard way that if there is no heat, your windows will not defrost! The air coming out of the vents was so cold that it actually froze the condensation on the outside of the windshield while I was driving. So beware of the consequences of this part going bad.

Thanks

could this be the issue in my 94 with no heat? air blows just fine, but no heat at all. its a 94 reg. cab xlt with the 3.0 V6 5 speed standard with no AC at all. all ik is that getting to work at 7am here in upstate NY is really really cold and getting home from college around 9pm is the same and the lack of a working defroster is pretty unsafe in the rain that we get here. how can i test this?

you need to start by feeling the heater hoses and see if they are getting hot. I assume your engine is warmed up properly

you could have a tstat this is stuck open. does your temp gauge work? You could have a clogged heater core. the good news is that on a 94 the heater cor cost $25 and takes 20 minues to change. I think you said you dont have AC installed on your truck. these fords have an isue with the blenddoor. I have not been able to determine if a tuck with no AC has a blend door.....

There is an electric blend door actuator for Rangers years 1995-current with round 'knobs' to control the HVAC. If you have the older horizontal sliding 'knobs' then your heat is manual and cable driven. If your heat doesn't work on the older Rangers, check all the linkages. Here is a link to fordpartsonline and click on view image to see a partial parts breakdown for the 94:

On the new Rangers, when you go to the dealer, ask for an actuater for your model Ranger with or without A/C. I have an 07 and there are two different styles for mine. The air system really hasn't changed since 95. Here is the service manual pinpoint test for my 07:

For Insufficient, Erratic, or No Heat:
Possible Causes: Function Selector Switch, Heater Control Valve, Stuck or bound linkage or door, Leaking or plugged vacuum hose, Temperature Blend Door Actuator.

Step 1: Check the coolant levels. If they are good then go to step 2.
Step 2: Check the heater core inlet and outlet hoses on the firewall. Do this when the truck has reached its normal operating temperature and is running with the function selector to FLOOR and the temperature selector to WARM. If the hoses are too hot to handle then go to step 3. If it isn't too hot to handle, check out the heater core.
Step 3: Check the Blend Door Actuator (Pinpoint Test E which is attached as 3 jpg files)

If this doesn't solve your problem and need to test further, let me know.

Had the same problem with my 97 Ranger. I was able to fix it this past weekend. Do you still have a problem or did you get it taken care of?

we replaced the tstat and had the same problem, the hoses get warm, but not the ones going into the core, so we think there is blockage in the core itself. i think the gauge may be busted because it never moved much

your post makes no sense to me........if the hoses are not getting hot then that is your problem.. Is the supply hose to the heater core getting hot where it comes out of the engine?.....What t-stat did you use......brand and temp

Water Boils at 212 degrees........your tstat should be somewhere around a 192 degree......that means the coolant is at about 192 degrees......the hoses should be hot!!!!!!!!!

Do you have AC.......did you feel the heater hoses on each side of the heater control valve

Default Re: No heat

I have a 95 ranger super and I have two problems. ONE is last week I had heat now it just all of a sudden stopped working. The hoses are hot and the box in the engine compartment that is next to the blower motor (heater core?) is cold.

TWO before I lost heat my blend switch would not work. GUESSING my servo went out or doors broke because i replaced the switch.

The AC would work on MAX AC ONLY all others was strait hot air even with compressor kickin on and off on just ac or defrost.

SO my question is should i start with the blend door to see if its broke or the motors gone bad or should i pull the core first.

ALSO my blower will only work on high the number 4 setting. BUT i pulled the resister at the bottom of the heater core (itch to get to) and all the elements are intact. with a power tester and flipping through the speeds I only get power to the BIG coil which is high speed. Replace the control switch on dash for that also. SO What now?

I had the same problem and thankfully it was just the control valve. I took the time to pull the blend door motor off just to see if it was broke. It took more time to check that than it did to replace the control valve. For $15 bucks I would just get the control valve, flush the heater core while you have it pulled apart, then replace the valve. If that doesn't fix the problem then look into the blend door. Save yourself some time and avoid the blend door unless you have to.
