Well I tried turning the heat up and down and I did get a slight response. It isn't as cold when turning the knob to the full hot. I am not sure what this indicates. I am gone for today. Thanks for your help. I will check back later to see any more responses.

There's not much else that could be in the way. That actuator fails or the blend door breaks/jams all the time.

Would it be in my best interest at this point to go to a parts store and order a new actuator or blend door? I guess the difference between Max AC and AC is that the damper makes it recirculate air inside cabin. Learning lots, thanks for all the help. I still don't see the blend door. Is this enclosed so that I wouldn't see something moving when I adjust the thermostat?

Well see whats wrong first. Look at the actuator and see if it is actuating. You'll see the thing moving on the actuator. If it is moving, then the blend door is broken so it is turning but the door isn't moving. If the actuator isn't turning, then see if it is just unplugged. If it is plugged in, pick up a new one.

I'm having the same problem. Is there an easy way to tell if the actuator is moving?

Is it possible to move the air bag system on a '99 up just and inch or so? That's all I would need to get to that rear screw holding the actuator. Maybe access it by removing the windshield defrost vent somehow? I've read that removing the dash is one way on the Ford-Trucks.com/forums site, but that seems like a nightmare to me. My vacuum hot water valve is open but the blend door doesn't work.

Thanks to this tread I was able to diagnose and fix my heater problem on our 2007 Ranger XLT 4WD 4.0 engine. There was only air conditioned and cool air, no heat. It turned out to be the air blend actuator. The little white box that sits on top if the HVAC unit behind the glove box. It's a pain to get out and back in but I did it. A1Auto.com has a video on how to do it but found it after I replaced the unit. When you remove the actuator you can plug it back in to test it. The plastic shaft should rotate when you turn the temp control from hot to cold (red to blue). Mine was dead. I was able to get a wholesale price at the local Ford dealer for 51.00 (including tax). A1Auto has an aftermarket part for 49.95 and free shipping. List price for this item is 75.00. BTW the OEM part is made in the USA!

I pulled the actuator out and it doesn't turn.

Anyone know of anywhere but the dealership you can find the part YL5H-19E616-AC. Can't seem to find it anywhere.

Did any of you smell burning insulation when your blend door problems started happening? It has been a month or so since mine quit working and I can still smell it. Strangely enough, no fuses blew. I think I will test the actuator before I take it out. Q: Should the blend door knob control the valve under the hood that opens and closes the hot coolant flow to the heater core? Mine has defaulted to the open position.

The hot water valve is ONLY activated (closed) when the HVAC control is in the OFF or MAX AC position. In those settings, vacuum pulls the valve closed. A spring reopens the valve when vacuum is removed (all other settings). The temperature knob does not have any control over anything but the blend door actuator.

Yesterday I checked for vacuum at the hot water valve and there is none at any HVAC setting, so I locked the valve in the closed position with a spring since it has been hotter than the hubs of hell here lately. Today I will feel the heater for it's usual heat. The heater core being cool will help the A/C do it's job better untill I change out the actuator. Thanks for the help Matt. The FIY site is at: 1aauto.com Great site for all of your cars.

Do the all the vents work properly? Like when you set the thing for panel only, it actually comes out of the panel only?
