Re: No heat
Hello all,
I have a 2007 ford ranger 4 cyl. and it has a wonderful air conditioning system. Sometimes will fog the rear window of the two seater and I am really enjoying it at this time of the year. Problem is there is absolutely no heat that comes out at any point in the year. The trucks coolant is topped off, there are no warning lights on the dash. I assume the blend door is the circle flange that moves up and down that is located on the right when you lower the glove box. It moves just fine when I turn the ac off and on. I am stuck trying to figure out next diagnostic step. Any help is much appreciated.

Re: No heat
Is the temperature gauge on the dash reading normal? If so, it is probably the hot water valve to the heater core stuck closed. Under the hood right where the hoses go through the firewall, there is a little box on one of the hoses and it has a vacuum line attached to it.
When you set the HVAC to OFF or MAX AC, it uses vacuum to close that valve, shutting off the hot water to the heater core. IMO, this is completely pointless and accomplishes absolutely nothing. And if it gets stuck closed, you have no heat.
Pull the vacuum line off and use some kind of poking apparatus to push inward through the hole the vac line was attached to. This will push the valve back to the open position. It is supposed to return to open with a spring, but they break. Cap off the vacuum line and leave it.

Re: No heat
Hello and thank you for your prompt response. The temp gauge on the dash is reading normal. I have looked for the box that is supposed to be on one of the hoses, and I don't see it. I have taken a picture of the engine and perhaps you can show me what I am looking for. Or perhaps a diameter of the vacuum tube would be of use. Is there some other parts that I have to take off before I can get to it first. OBTW, I forgot to mention that this is a manual trans. I don't know if that changes anything.
TIA

Re: No heat
Might help if you post the picture....
If you follow the hoses for the heater core up to the firewall, you'll run right into it. Its the only thing on the hose.

Re: No heat
Not sure how to make Flickr show up on here. Heres the link to the picture.

I don't even see the valve on there at all. Hmmmmm.
When the engine is warmed up and the heat is on, do both of those hoses get hot?

Re: No heat
They are warm to the touch. Dunno how hot they should get.

Re: No heat
They should be hot as hell. Like 190 - 200 degrees. If there is no control valve on your year ranger, its possible the heater core is just clogged.

Re: No heat
Ok. I let it heat up some more and it definitly got hotter. What would clog a heater core and how does one clean this. Is there a filter of sorts that needs cleaned/replaced. I thank you for your help. Love my ranger, can't wait to get this off of its maintenance list

Re: No heat
If both hoses are getting hot, it probably isn't clogged and if there is a valve, its open. So sounds like the blend door is staying the full cold position.

Re: No heat
No. Thats the damper that switches from outside air to inside recirculate. It will only move up in MAX AC and OFF.
The heat blend door is to the left. That little white box with the wires coming out of it is the actuator for it. See if it runs when you adjust the heat.

Re: No heat
Well I went to investigate and I saw something that I hadn't noticed before. When the damper goes all the way up to reveal the screen with fan behind it, I can see some pine straw in there. Could this be the problem? How is the best way to get this out? Just a pair of tongs, or do I need to remove some parts first?

Re: No heat
Is that normal, yes. Is that your problem, no. That damper and its ducting is not related to the heat. Can you clean it out, maybe if you start taking things apart further.
