1999 Ranger - Won't Start, tried everything
Hi there everyone,
Ran into an issue with my 1999 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0L 6 Cylinder 2wd Automatic.
Actually, I have a few issues, but right now my biggest problem is a no-crank-no-start situation, that seems to be unique.
First started a while back, I noticed every single time I tried to start my truck it got weaker and weaker, shortly after replacing my radiator and putting new fluid into it etc. One day, the truck just wouldn't start no more.
Wasn't sure exactly what the problem was, so the first thing I did was get myself a brand new starter (which has the starter-solenoid already attached to it). That got the truck running again.
About 3 days later the truck wouldn't start yet again after I had stopped at a gas station. Didn't have much indication of what was wrong, but figured it was the battery and asked a stranger to jump my truck. We tried to jump start the truck for nearly an hour with no success whatsoever. Ended up pushing the truck home.
Couple days later, I borrowed an electronic starter/charger from my neighbor. One of the fancy ones that'll even put air into your tires, with roughly triple the cranking amps of what I needed for a jump start, but gave it a shot anyways -- surprisingly this worked!!!
So, I took a trip to AutoZone, had the battery checked out which came back as good, but it was at 85% (probably from pushing the truck for 3hrs with the emergency lights flashing). I had the battery charged, put it back into the truck and the truck didn't do anything.
What I mean by that, is no crank, no start, no clicking, no nothing. Lights turned on just fine, horn worked, radio etc. but that was it.
After that I decided to be a little stupid/crazy and replaced the battery terminal connectors, and also checked every single fuse I have, which all came back fine.
Had the alternator checked which also came back just fine.
At this point, I have a BRAND NEW radiator, starter, battery, starter solenoid, and battery terminal connectors.
I also checked my air filter which looked like it was brand new.
Then I noticed my Anti-Theft system providing me with the 1-6 error code on the dash.
I went onto youtube, looked up forum posts, etc. and tried every trick in the book from using my 2nd key, to taping the chip from one of my keys straight onto the transceiver and never got any results.
Finally, I took the transceiver off of my ignition switch, and tried starting the truck again just to see what would happen, and received a different error code (didn't bother looking it up, but I THINK it was 1-3).
That made me suspect that my transceiver went bad.
My logic being, with an error code 1-6 (Error in communication between PATS [which consists of the PCM & transceiver] and the EECV), and the code changes to 1-3 [no code received] after REMOVING the transceiver that tells me that something must be wrong with it. If the transceiver, and PCM were fine, theoretically I should still receive the 1-6 code after removing the transceiver because the problem would still be the same problem. But by removing the transceiver, and having the PATS error code change on me, that sounds like it might be the problem I've been looking for. Especially since I had the same error code regardless which of my 2 programmed keys I was using.
I'm waiting on a replacement transceiver which should come in SEP 10th currently (EXACT SAME part number), but I'm wondering if something else is/could be the problem.
---
I'm not exactly mechanically inclined, but I'm also not an idiot. All these parts I replaced myself (albeit with help from the Haynes Repair Manual for Ford Ranger 1993-2011 ALL MODELS), and with youtube videos/images so I knew exactly what I was looking for, in color.
Regardless, any help/advice would be greatly appreciated, because I'm seriously over my head on this.
Perhaps is there some way to COMPLETELY REMOVE PATS cheaply, or have a complete bypass of PATS?
Once again, my truck is a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0L 6 Cylinder 2wd Automatic.
Thanks in advance,
