Default Starter spins but not engageing flywheel,No Start?

2004 3.0 automatic. I had hit and miss for awhile.Turn key and seems the starter would spin faster than normal,no start, turn key off turn key on sound normal perfect start. It did this off and on for several days. Went for a coffee at Speedway turned key, fast spin on starter and no start, turned key off tried restarting with key off and on several times no start, so I had it towed down the street to the mechanic. Bad starer? solenoid, crank sensor? What do you think?? Help Please.

Sounds like the bendix drive in the starter is bad.

I think I figured it out, I found a red 3 way plastic cap on my garage floor, wondered what the heck it was, so I kept it and I believe it covers the 3 wire connections on the solenoid. So I am assuming the power wires are rusted, corroded and not letting the power to the solenoid. So wire brushing or replacing wire end should fix it,hopefully!

i've known many people who've "gotten by" for years by just tapping on their starter when it sticks lol, though kind of a pain...

Yea i would say a starter should fix you right up...Not uncommon on 3.0s

Ended up being the inertia switch code, was hit and miss cutting off the fuel.the mechanic replaced it, total cost $70. Starts right up.
