Does anyone have any input on this that isn't so controversial? Preferably by people who have tried the mod. I'm new to modding and since this is such a popular thing to start with, I'd like to get to the bottom of it.

there's not much there for the 4.0L Its basically a short trumpet from behind the headlight to the airbox.
What changes the throttle response slightly is the us of an airfilter other than the paper cartridge style, think K&N cotton filter whether oiled or not and lastly a foam based filter.. much like you would see in a shop vac. throttle response is only going to majorly improve if and when you swap out to a larger T/B which is where it all bottlenecks anyway.
Also keep in mind, many people parrot a lot of things and lack in real world experiences and or knowledge base; AKA Monitor or Magazine mechanics.
Personally, I currently run a Safari snorkel setup which maximized my original factory airbox with a K&N standard oiled cotton filter. Its not a race truck, replacement parts are easy to get, I dont suck in HOT air from the engine bay.. and Noise? What used to be cool I guess is now less than desired.
I'm trying to find ways to keep the truck more quiet in some ways, the exhaust sounds great but you can hear it from 5 acres away idling almost and its not obnoxious, just noticable
