Default AC Problem

Hey guys im trying to troubleshoot my son's 2000 ford ranger xlt 4.0 4x4 ac system. the issue im having is the compressor may kick on once cuts off and doesn't come on again. the system is charged and im stumped as to what it might be im leaning towards possibly a high or low pressure switch or an ac cycling switch but not sure didn't know if anyone might have had a similar issue and can provide some advice on it . Thanks guys

Default Re: AC Problem

It could be that the compressor clutch gap is excessive or the magnetic coil is going bad. As the parts heat up the magnet loses its strength, so if it comes on once or twice but then no more, this is the first thing I check. Once the compressor shuts off and won't come on again, leave the AC on for a few minutes, then take a hammer handle or something light and not sharp (in case it gets tangled in the serpentine belt!) and gently bump the clutch face in towards the coil. If it engages and runs, this is likely your problem. Usually there are shims behind the clutch that can be taken out to reduce the gap and restore function. This test costs nothing and is worth a try!

Good luck,
Regan
