Brake drum diameter
Is there a way to determine what the rear drum diameter is without removing the wheel and drum to measure? I want to order new ones before I tear it apart but every site asks me what the diameter is.

Re: Brake drum diameter
measure the circumference and divide by 3.14

fwiw i think the 9 and 10 inch drums look quite a bit different from the outside. i want to say 10s are smoother and 9s have little fins/ribs..., but i could be wrong on that. might help you during your investigation

Re: Brake drum diameter
It depends on the model and options. For example, in 2003, the base drums are 9". Adding any one or more of these options got you the 10" upgrade:
4x4
Edge
Supercab
Payload Package #2
Later years similar.
Basically, the 9" are only for 2WD regular cab XL / XLT with base payload. Since yours is a 4x4 S/C, it definitely has 10" drums.
As stated above, the 9" are finned on the outside, 10" are smooth.

Re: Brake drum diameter
Yes, that will work but then I'd have to buy a new tape measure.
I was hoping for something more along the lines of an axle code or an engine/body combo that always had 10" vs 9" drums.

Just curious, why does my XL 2wd have 10"? Base model and it doesn't even have cruise control and has minimal springs. I suppose it could have been changed, but why?
To the OP, you can crawl under the truck and measure the backing plate diameter. It measures about an inch bigger than the size.

Payload Package 2 was a standalone option that was available on your truck when new. Whether he realized it or not, the original purchaser paid extra for it. On a 2WD, regular Cab, it means slightly higher rate leaf springs and larger diameter, wider rear brakes. The PP2 option ups the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of a Ranger by about 300~400 pounds depending on year and other optional equipment.
