Default Brake Proportioning valve... do I really need it?

So apparently my mechanic says I need a new one but mentioned he could just bypass it and not use it at all.

So far I've found a used one from a junkyard at around $75 and a new one is starting at around $400.

So has anyone around here just bypassed the valve or is it really not recommended?

I know this is slightly old but removing the proportioning valve is a very bad idea and possibly against the law. The front brakes deliver more stopping power than the rear. Especially if you have drum brakes in the rear. The proportioning valve sends more pressure to the front than the rear. If you remove it you will get equal pressure to front and rear and your stopping power will be greatly reduced. You may even lock up the rears every time you hit the brakes. I wouldn't trust any mechanic that would suggest bypassing it. These things hardly even go bad so I would look for a second opinion.

Jury rigging the brakes is stupid.
