Your question is kind of all over the place. What specifically are you trying to discuss?

How good is the four wheel drive system on a ranger compared to other mid sized trucks?? I owned a 99 s 10 back in 99 and 2000. It had cv axle and I think it sucked compared to this Dana 35

I'm not sure it is "Better" then others. When I bought my 06 Ranger new it worked down to the Ranger or the Tacoma. Both had about the same ratings for what I wanted and came down to price. At $5K less the Ranger was a no brainier. Now with 194K miles I am happy. But I didn't buy it for off roading. It worked well as a commuter and light haling and towing. The occasional camping trip and the like. The axles have never needed repair with the exception of the left front hub bearings doing out.
A buddy of mine had a S-10 that had problems with the CVs. But he was ruff on it off roading.

Lack of aftermarket

Electronic 4wd module that was prone to failure (2001)

T bar ifs setup was outdated

.....

I would buy one over a s10, those are complete garbage

Yeah it's crazy how they make something strong and durable and do away with it. The Dana 35 , is pretty tough. I plan on doing a swap soon. I'm going with the Dana 30. That's what they put in jeeps

That says a lot if the ranger is up there with the Tacoma. I hate to say it because I love ford trucks but the Tacoma is tough

I get a hard time from my friends for liking rangers. Yes Taco's are tougher. Yes a S10 is much easier to do a V8 swap than a ranger and a SBC is cheaper, more potential horsepower than a 5.0. But I like rangers.

None of the rest makes a difference to me, I'll pass up the taco for a ranger any day and will drive one for the rest of my life. Might end up buying a 2019 when they spring them just because of the name. Fanatic.

So to me a Ranger is "better" but better is all up to the beholder as in every other thing in life.
I ate a JimmyJohn's sub today. I think they are better than Donatos, Flyers, Subway, and several others. Better.

Ranger... hands down, any day of the week. If all the Rangers disappeared and there was none to be had, I would probably go with a Tacoma as my next choice. S10, Colorado, Canyon, etc... will never see the inside of my garage. If that was all that was available, I would walk.

I bought an Isuzu I-290(chevy colorado) at the end of 2007, it was just a 2wd, and I owned it till the end of 2009, when my wife was pregnant with our first, and it was our only car (we both had motorcycles, she sold hers when she got preggers, but I kept mine till we had our second kid), and the truck just couldn't hold a baby car seat, at least not easily/safely.

I now have my 98 b4000 4x4.

To compare the two. I actually prefer the styling of the colorado. Always have. I had a TON of minor issues with it though, It leaked into the interior when it rained, and the tire pressure sensor system was screwy and it would always go off, even though I checked my tire pressure every two weeks. The dealer never got the two things sorted before I sold it. It was much quicker to freeway speeds, the engine revved much more freely, and it got decidedly better fuel economy. The interior of my b4000 is decidedly more upscale from the colorado, despite being 9 years older.

why did I buy my b4000? well The price was right. A low mileage (only 82,000 original miles), even though it was older, it did have a salvage title, but I took it to a mechanic who informed the the frame was straight and only the front end had any sign of damage and it was repaired decently. I paid just over $2000 for it, And put in another ~1500 into a few repairs and parts to get it working great (needed air bags, fuel pump, gaskets on the intake, motor for the 4x4, front axle bearings, tires, brakes and shocks). I knew I was going to be selling my XJ, and wanted a 4x4, and for the less than $4000 I have into my truck I couldn't have touched another 4x4 colorado/newer ranger/taco/nissan. I did NOT want an s10, my friend has one, and has put 4 engines into it... he just replaces the engine when they blow up because its cheaper to do that than buy a new vehicle... It Just checked the right boxes, Truck, 4x4, extended cab, cheap, reliable. I've put close to 15k miles on it since I bought it less than a year ago, and the only problem I've had with it after initial work was the replacement fuel pump went bad, and had to be replaced (under warranty) again.

as far as getting a vehicle to go off road? Get a jeep. Seriously. There's no contest. The platform is better, and the after market is 10x better than anything else out there. For my ranger is there one lift option, and its expensive. for my XJ? there were 4 dozen options that covered a range of prices, lift heights, and off road styles. a wrangler gets twice that many options.
