I now have my 98 b4000 4x4.
To compare the two. I actually prefer the styling of the colorado. Always have. I had a TON of minor issues with it though, It leaked into the interior when it rained, and the tire pressure sensor system was screwy and it would always go off, even though I checked my tire pressure every two weeks. The dealer never got the two things sorted before I sold it. It was much quicker to freeway speeds, the engine revved much more freely, and it got decidedly better fuel economy. The interior of my b4000 is decidedly more upscale from the colorado, despite being 9 years older.
why did I buy my b4000? well The price was right. A low mileage (only 82,000 original miles), even though it was older, it did have a salvage title, but I took it to a mechanic who informed the the frame was straight and only the front end had any sign of damage and it was repaired decently. I paid just over $2000 for it, And put in another ~1500 into a few repairs and parts to get it working great (needed air bags, fuel pump, gaskets on the intake, motor for the 4x4, front axle bearings, tires, brakes and shocks). I knew I was going to be selling my XJ, and wanted a 4x4, and for the less than $4000 I have into my truck I couldn't have touched another 4x4 colorado/newer ranger/taco/nissan. I did NOT want an s10, my friend has one, and has put 4 engines into it... he just replaces the engine when they blow up because its cheaper to do that than buy a new vehicle... It Just checked the right boxes, Truck, 4x4, extended cab, cheap, reliable. I've put close to 15k miles on it since I bought it less than a year ago, and the only problem I've had with it after initial work was the replacement fuel pump went bad, and had to be replaced (under warranty) again.
as far as getting a vehicle to go off road? Get a jeep. Seriously. There's no contest. The platform is better, and the after market is 10x better than anything else out there. For my ranger is there one lift option, and its expensive. for my XJ? there were 4 dozen options that covered a range of prices, lift heights, and off road styles. a wrangler gets twice that many options.

Yeah I agree about the jeep, but I love that 6 foot bed

Re: Ford ranger 4×4 compared to s10 Toyota ECT...
The funny part of all this is it doesnt matter if its Bugatti, Ford, or Toyota.. each has all their own problems and if you questioned every owner you'll find as many complaints as you do praises.. whether thats from the Dealer level or the manufacturing level. Trust me I worked for both Toyota for 3.5 years, and Nissan for almost 3 years, and I also worked at Ford Dealership and you hear it all. Nothing differentiated other than the badge on the front. Toyota guys act like their shit doesnt break, you should visit their forums and LOL at the repair questions and troubleshooting issues.
The Tacoma just seems to have a wider range of enthusiasts because of the way Toyota plays it on the world market. If you havent noticed, our Rangers even when in production are QUITE different from what the rest of the world got. But knowing what I do in all aspects of the production, sales, and aftermarket support as I do [yes theres always more to learn too], I'll be dammed if id pay more for a Tacoma than I would for a like equipped Tundra despite the Tundra going away now.
I think Ford failed the ranger platform in 2011 where instead of taking it away from the market, they should have introduced it as a full four door model, AS THEY DID everywhere else in the world and grab their balls to offer it in a like diesel trim as well. They would have cornered the market in the States at least for the first couple years until the other makes wined about the tariffs and taxes implemented on their units to be allowed despite nearly all of their units being made in the States for the most part.
And JEEPs.. I cant help it, I am totally biased on these vehicles.. for two reasons. (1) the things are whored out like PT Cruisers, Ford Escorts, and the coveted Honda Civic. (2) the amount of people shelling out top fucking pound me in the ass sideways to buy a near $54k vehicle shod with another $18k worth of eye popp'n, attention whore, mall-crawlin, Look I have a JEEP - ME too crowd... And 1/2 of them the only dirt they see is a dirt driveway.
Id be less biased if it didnt seem like the only offroad vehicle in Vegas but for the money they want, id buy another Xterra 2nd Gen or an FJ over a JEEP just to say I DIDNT fall victim to the ME-TOO craze. I might actually giggle tremendously if "Great Wall Motors" of China actually succeeds in their Bid to Fiat/JEEP/Chrysler.

I cant say I beat the crap out of my Ranger but I'll tell you what, its never ever got me stranded or left on the side of the road and I know my Xterra wont either.

There's a reason I own a truck, and not my jeep... My jeep was amazing, but I didn't need an off road toy, I needed something I could haul stuff with. (plus the jeep got like 12mpg...).
I've been thinking about getting my truck up to par to get it on some back trails, and its just a lot harder and more expensive to do it... If I wanted to run 33" tires on my jeep? I already had a 3.5" lift, so I just needed to take off my fender flairs, that was it. My truck? LOTs more work to go up to a 33" tire from a 31"...

I'm perfectly OK with this. I don't buy new cars. So it means that used, lightly used ones are plentiful. I am hoping the price of used JKU's drops after the new JL's come out on the market.
as far as china buying jeep. I have a hard time believing that will happen any time soon. FCA's only brand that makes any measurable money is Jeep, its keeping their operations afloat, I cannot image them giving up the golden goose. if they do, it would be a very short sighted.
