Default Changing oil on the 3.0

Ok ive done this a million times to many types of cars and trucks and this one is really trying me. I have the 3.0L in my 99 ranger and cant for the life of me figure out how to get the new oil filter down into the truck without getting dirt and grime all over the seal and side of the new oil filter. I looked and without taking stuff off, i dont see a way to get the filter on from the bottom. So that leaves lowering it down underneath the steering shaft, rotate a ton, and attempt to find the threads on something i cant see. Is there a trick to this? Ive had porsches that are easier to work on than this
