Default 98 steering column into a 2000

Ok so I am new to fordrangerforum.com and I have searched for my answer for a few days now but can't find what I'm looking for. I have a 2000 ranger that is an automatic and I have picked up a 98 5speed. Both have the 3.0l and both have blown motors. I picked up a motor for the 2000 and figured that when I swap the motors out I might as well swap the 5 speed from the 98 into the 2000 at the same time. My only concern is how to make the steering column from the non pats 98 work in my 2000 that has the pats. I've seen several post about people taping the key to the pats box behind the glove box and then just using the key for the 98 steering column and just wanted clarification that this actually works or is it best just to do away with the pats system all together.

Pats columns and non pats columns are the same.

On the pats column there is an extra harness that runs from the bottom of the column to the transponder which is the little sensor around the key cylinder.

Just swap the shrouds.

Differences:
Manual doesn't have shift rod on top of the column (just unbolts using torx bits).
Manual has keylock (have to push lock in to pull key out).
Auto has handle at the end of the shift rod and opening on column.

Take the shrouds off and you will see the commonality of the two.

Shift linkage for the auto goes through the same hole the clutch does on the manual.

Hey thanks for the info. The only other question I have is after I swap columns I will still have to leave the key with the transponder in the truck right?

If your are using the 5 speed computer you don't have to worry about it, you just have to add a jumper wire where the PATS module is behind the glove box. (I put a PATS harness in a non pats truck and it will cause a no start condition).

3 Parts to PATS:
Engine computer
PATS module
Key

All 3 are paired to each other so one can't do anything without all 3. Only way to defeat this is to use non-pats computer.

Congrats on the swap I did one a few years back. I just swapped the shroud and left the shift tube in place. Just unbolted the part that protrudes I also didn't want the push button key release so leaving the auto column deleted that
