Default 2004 Ford Ranger 4x4- 4 high thunking noise

Hi My name is Randall. I have a 2004 ford ranger 4x4 with a 4 liter v6. When I drive in 2 wheel drive it goes just fine. Same with 4 low. This was a check, I don't try to drive in 4 low. The problem occurs in 4 high. I know you are not supposed to drive in 4 high on dry pavement. Anyway, when driving along in conditions where 4 wheel drive is desired, a clunk noise occurs periodically whether turning or going straight. I would like to know if A. is this causing damage to the vehicle and B. is there a way to fix it. Simple checks would be appreciated, as I am a beginner. It almost sounds like the 4 wheel is engaging and disengaging, but I don't notice it at all when I first change into 4 high. It only happens when driving down the road, usually when I have let off the gas and I am coasting. For example, when I am coming to a Red light or occasionally when I am turning. It also does not do it at all if the roads are extremely slippery. Any help would be appreciated, Thank you!

I can't say for sure, but I am almost positive your cv joint is broken. I think it's called the cv joint. Look under your truck on the front driveshaft. Is the boot torn?
When I bought my truck, I was a ranger noob and didn't bother to notice a bad cv joint. When I would put the truck in 4x4 I would hear a clunk about every 45 seconds or so. After some research I found out some reasons why it could be doin that. I bought a rebuild kit from the auto parts store and it never clunked after that.

Check your fluid levels in the transfer case, front and rear end also the drive shaft sliding rear spline could be causing the thunking noise.Check your u-joints for wear.
