A/C question

Well I looked into my a/c today because it hasn't worked since I received the truck. When I push in the knob for the a/c the little light comes on, but when I popped the hood the compressor wasn't turning at all. I assume that since the light comes on the electrical part is ok(just assuming,tell me if I'm wrong) so would it be a bad field coil or do the early rangers have the cutoff switch when the freon gets too low?
