Default stearing issue

I have a 1998, 4cyl

What does the steering rod go into? there is fluid all over in the area directly under the pump but seems to high to be the rack itself. Is there something inbetween? like a gear box?

You prob need a new rack at that point.

No physical connection on these trucks. The steering box simply pushes the fluid to the rack to move it. Most likely you have a line or fitting leak or it's the rack itself. Id clean the are well then get under it with a light and have someone turn the wheel to put pressure on it till you find the source.

Ok, cuz the fluid seems to high to be coming from the rack. I am hoping it's not the rack because even though the part seems fairly inexpensive, it looks like a b**** to replace.

It's not so bad couple lines like 4 bolts I think. Hardest part is counting tie rod threads to get it back close for alignment. These trucks are real easy compared to some I've done haha. But id start with trying to identify leaks. But hoses are fairly cheap so if your pretty confident it's not the rack that may be a good place to start. But do try to diagnose for sure first after cleaning up the mess.

good news turned out to be the O ring and some other teflon part got messed up when me and a traveling mechanic replaced the hose coming out of the side of the pump. We must have messed it up some how and it took till now to fail. My guy charged my $64 to fix and refill and clean up the mess, next up is the radiator when it comes in the mail and the thermostat will go too beacuse it takes forever tow arm up even driving 10 miles with the radiator blocked barely had the temp gague moving so that will be the next project. on a side note I noticed I had 196600 on it...
