Default Help! AFTER the alternator failed...

So- I'm reaching out to the FRF for car trouble, not on my ranger, but this time on my reliable wife's car...2007 Elantra.

So- we have 189k on this thing, and this weekend, back from our honeymoon that morning, rushing to a friends wedding, the alternator pully failed and the engine overheated because the fan belt snapped on it.

I replaced the alternator and belt, but now I'm dripping coolant from somewhere near the reservoir, and I have a black liquid dropping from somewhere else onto the alternator...which is slinging it around a bit as the belt races....thoughts?

As and added fun thing, I immediately stripped the mounting hole in the top of the alternator while adjusting the belt...I'll get to that who knows when. Until then it's a little on the loose side.

Also - what other work should I do after an engine has overheated? I smelled/heard a squeal when starting the car just before this catastrophe. I was in such a rush I took off for the highway anyway. The battery light went on, the start was slow, but I figure it was a poor battery connection which happens a lot on this car. It must have been 30 minutes before I noticed the temp gauge all the way up and pulled over. I hope the belt had just snapped but I donno.

Your water pump probably stopped spinning but im almost 100% sure it has an electric fan. Oil on the belt will make it slip if that is the black substance dripping. As for the coolant leak. Go rent a coolant system pressurizer from auto zone and you will see the leak very quickly

Please forgive me for asking this! I thing I know what you mean, but this caught me eye.

You said, "my reliable wife's car"....

Did you happen to mean, your wife's reliable car?

Don't get me wrong. Nothing is as important as having a reliable wife. Congratulations, if that is the case!

Many thanks- I'll start with the coolant system check (as well as keep an eye on the oil level to see if there is a leak).

This morning I woke to a very wide puddle underneath the radiator....but the the coolant in the reservoir is still full since I topped it off the day before. I couldn't tell what the fluid on the ground was though...no smell...and maybe a liiiiitle bit oillyness to it, but I couldn't be sure.

Are there any other things I should do/change following an engine overheat? Like the oil for instance?

Result: radiator had a leak. Swapped in a new one for $150. Then I found a leak with the brand new water pump. I guess they're cheaply made and break easy with an overheat. Once that's in, I should be good.

Thanks for the pressure test idea-

Phil
