ABS issue

New subscriber. 99 Ranger 4WD. 100,000 miles. Owned since new. Issue: When almost to a stop braking seems to "go away" as though ABS has kicked in. Need to push much harder on pedal and if release steering wheel the truck pulls to right. Lots of brake dust on right front wheel. Can feel heat radiating from right from wheel. Suggestions? (Am I in the right section of the forum here?) Thanks!

Check your calipers....just a guess though

yeah check your calipers my friends truck was doing the same exact thing all we did was compress the pistons in the calipers and put them back on and it was fine im not sure if you have any other problems but thats what i did and it worked so hopefully this helps you out

Why does every one hate ABS and think it's trying to kill them?

Hey does it do this from the get go or only after you've been driving a bit?

If your brakes are rubbing they will heat up and cause very noticeable fade. So do what he suggests and if that or making sure your parking brake isn't partially engaged does not solve the problem immediately, then get new calipers ASAP.
See if you didn't mention the heat, it would have sounded like the brakes needed to be bled. The heat from the wheel says your brakes are dragging.

It has nothing to do with ABS.

Braking is failing.
It pulls to the right.
The right wheel is covered in brake dust.
The right brakes are getting hot

I think you need to pull the right wheel off and look at the brake. I suspect the problem will be obvious once you do that.

It sounds like your caliper is the problem. Check the slider pins to see if they are stuck. If they are, your caliber is binding and will not travel as it should. It's quite common is areas where salt is used in the winter. Clean them up and lube them with high temp brake grease twice a year to prevent the problem. You can get replacement pins easily if you can't salvage the old ones.

If that is not the problem, check your pistons for binding. This is not as common and will require either a rebuild or a caliper replacement.

Check the other side while you are at it. You might need new pads now as well as a result.

Just curious, did you ever get this fixed? Sounds like you definitely have caliper sticking to generate heat and excess brake dust. Does truck pull to right always or only when it feels as if ABS kicks in? My truck pulled to right when under slight braking rolling up to stop. Left front ABS sensor was bad. Cost $360 to have dealer fix. Now a year and half later it does the same thing but pulls left. I am going to try to change the right sensor myself, if I can figure out where it is. I was told it is in hub but only line I see going to hub is the vacuum line for locking hubs. Anyone know for certain where it is?

Here I stole a picture for you.
Sensor and some wireloom are one unit. follow the wire to find the connection.

ABS IMO is dangerous for people who know how to drive. those who cant it doesnt matter cuz theyre gonna wreck anyway. if 1 or 2 wheels are on a slick surface (ex ice) and the rest have good traction, then your chances of stopping are greatly reduced. the system doesnt know that and wont allow you to put enough braking power to the wheels that have good traction to get you stopped.

another way the manufacturers are trying to make cars/trucks easier to drive for those who dont understand what a car is and how to drive it. but it makes it harder and less safe for us who know how to get a vehicle stopped even if were in 5 feet of snow, 80 mph, and sideways....

Yes they certainly do know what wheel is locking and what wheel isn't. Each wheel is controlled seperately. Your understanding of ABS is incorrect, as is your statement about it making it more dangerous.

ok you come here and proove me wrong this winter. i have been in this situation a couple times and each time the ABS screws me up. im not trying to be an ass but i dont let people tell me im wrong when i know that im not
