Flashing means there is a transmission code, take it to a tranny repair shop and they will read the quote and give an estimate on cost to fix (some places for free)

She lives right down the street from a Ford dealership so I told her to go there and have them diagnose it. I just find it weird that the light doesn't come on at all now?. Do these cars have an overdrive shift solenoid?

Ford might charge you

And my 06 had the light come on every now and then, being off a few months at a time. I never thought anything of it until I got locked into 2nd gear once. Pulled into the tranny shop by accident, just wanted off the road. Got a cheap quote and everything, 2 weeks later before I get it fixed I said goodbye to her.

The 5r55e in the Rangers and explorers aren't known for reliability. Personally my light flashed at me last week going into 5th. Got the code pulled and it was incorrect gear ratio. When I restarted the truck the light did not come on. That being said I drove it on the interstate afterwards and it shifted into 5th fine. Was advised that likely one of the balls or springs stuck causing the code. Was told to drive it and don't worry about it unless it happens again.

By the OD light not coming on anymore manual it may be of concern, does the trans shift into 5th fine on the road? If it does, don't fret about and drive the damn thing. If not then you might need to get it rebuilt for ~$1500 or replace with a lower mileage trans from a junkyard for $300-500.
Personally I'd drive it till the thing blows.

Don't associate the O/D flashing with an overdrive issue. O/D flashing means transmission code just like a check engine light is meant for engine code.

Any code scanner can pull this error code if it is still set. It will be a P0700-P0799. Most auto parts stores can scan it for free, so you don't have to worry about Ford's insane diagnostic scan fee.

A lot of times it is something simple as a band adjustment.
