Default Need advice on '98 Ranger I'm looking at (rust)

Hello all, I'm buying my first Ranger and here's the one I'm most keen on: http://www.randywisechevy.com/Vehicl...-MI/2703035823
It's 4x4, has the 4.0L, and looks real sexy all blacked out.

The truck has two problems I'm aware of, first that the check engine light is on due to an exhaust leak (couple hundred dollar fix right? I will get this checked out by a third party before buying), and second that there is some rust damage. The dealer sent me the following pics when I asked about rust:

I guess the previous owner tried to make some repairs. My question: Is this an acceptable amount of rust? Should I do any repairs myself if I do buy (wire brush plus applying por-15 seems the usual advice on here)? And is that a reasonable price to ask for this vehicle assuming the check engine light is due to a minor exhaust leak? Thanks.

P.s. the dealer lists the fuel economy as 17-22 mpg... sounds optimistic?

That truck looks pretty clean other than that minor rust, but it is overpriced. I'm not sure how pricing is in your is but that seems high. From a dealer so going to be high anyway but I'd say more of a $4500 truck. That being said KBB lists it as $6130 from dealer or $4450 from private, so maybe the pricing isn't too bad. MPG are a little optimistic you are right. And if you plan on keeping it a while it would be a good idea to do some rust repair just so it doesn't spread

I have similar rust on the pinch welds like that but to a lesser degree. It's been there for about 5 years and hasn't really gotten any worse as long as I keep some fluid film on it. Also 16-19 is more likely once you get that exhaust leak fixed....assuming you don't drive like a mad man.

Seems a lil on the high side to me. Also some fiberglass damage there on the bed. Some one got happy with the Plasti Dip I see. Pretty clean interior. In my neck of the woods I would guess that truck to be in the $3500-$4000 range though. Or less.

I'm with you, fiberglass repair is need if you wanted. Interior looks pretty clean, the driver window buttons looked broken. Good engine with low mileage but I would definitely confirm that check engine light. If it's just what they say I bet you could get the dealer down to $4500 maybe $4000 but that's optimistic.

You think all the plasti dip would look crappy in person? I'll be traveling a long ways to check this one out.

Thanks for the replies.
