It really depends on what you want to do maintenance on.

The more tools you have, the more you can do.
While I agree that a 30 piece or 100 piece set would get you most of what you need, it never fails that there's always ONE FREAKING THING that you need that you don't have.

Haha yeah I've already picked out the 145 piece socket set I'm gonna buy. It's by stanely, are they as credible as craftsman?

For what you're using them for (raw beginner / basic maintenance work) - they will be fine.

Don't sell a kidney to buy Snap-On or anything - as they wont help you get educated about your vehicle.

Build the arsenal over time.

I got a large Craftsmen set back in Florida and its top shelf. Agree on the vice grips- I got 2 vice grip brand pairs and they are very useful.
