Default where is fuel filter?

Hello

I have a 1987 Ranger XLT. 98K, pretty good shape. Burns a little oil, no radiator burn. Where is the fuel filter? Is it on the rail? I think there is a metal piece covering it. Maybe to protect it since it has 4wd?

Thanks

It may be i the same location as the newer ones which is on the driver's side. The fuel lines run through the frame on the driver's side and on a 03 regular cab it is in the chassis frame just behind the cab.

my truck's fuel filter is on the inside of the frame rail, on the driver's side with a peice of metal covering it. Its right underneath the door, about 2 feet ahead of the front of the gas tank.
