I realized after I made that post that you aren't doing what I thought (I thought you were replacing the motor in the cluster)
You can take off the lens while it's still in the truck ( I believe it's only worth removing in a manual, as that is easy) but keep in mind the screws you remove will probably fall down and get stuck on the steering column, so have a magnet ready.
I find it easier to remove in my truck because I only have to undo 3 clips in the back and remove 4 screws holding it into the truck (it's manual), but when working on my dad's truck (auto) I keep the cluster in if I can because removing the PRND12 mechanism is way too much of a pain.
Also, I have heard of other members who had a jumping needle like that and put in another peg so it doesn't get itself stuck like yours is now.
