Default How to engage AC compressor?

Ok, so I've had my 99 ranger xlt 4.0 for a few years now and the AC has never worked. I decided to try and go the easy route and bought an AC recharge kit.
I've charged it to the appropriate level, but the AC compressor still won't kick on. I've read that if I can engage it it will pull in the freon and eventually engage itself.
I've never messed with AC before, and I'm just not sure what the best course of action is.
So, how do I engage the AC compressor?

You need have it sucked dry with a vacuum pump and see if it holds the vacuum. If it does add freon, the pump won't engage until there is enough pressure in the system. If you see any oil on the lines or fittings that would be a leak and that part will need to be replaced.

I thought there was a way to just use a jumper cable on the low pressure switch although that is not reccomended.

I believe you can just jump the prongs on the pressure switch and it will activate, just not for more than a 1/2 second.

(Maybe it was the relay, idk)

Thanks for the responses...I ended up figuring it out myself by making jumper wires with gorilla clips and connecting the AC compressor directly to the battery while I recharged the system. After it was charged, I disconnected the jumper cables and the compressor engages on its own now.
