90 Ranger 2.3T pre-swapped
So...it's been a really really really long time since I've been on the forum. I've missed it lol. But, to the business. I have a buddy who's selling me a Ranger 2 door, short bed 2wd and it's already been swapped with a 2.3T. The thing that I'm wondering, is how good is the Ranger dual plug head? For some reason unknown to myself and he forgets why, he just kept the 2.3 dual plug head and had it ported. I've been told that the 2.3 heads have always been weak and prone to cracking and I'm wondering if this has been a problem with anyone running a 2.3 at all. 1500 bucks isn't bad for this truck considering it's actually in decent condition body wise and has the swap already done with a ''stage 3'' clutch (the name escapes me right now). That, and, has anyone run the factory SVO intercooler with a hole punched in the hood? I don't really like how he has all the intercooler piping ran and I know that a FMIC is a whole lot better, but if I can move the stock intercooler forward away from the header and actually angle it to be mounted with a scoop on the hood I wonder if this could be easier to work with.
Oh, and don't judge- Right now I'm rolling a 01 Grand Cherokee, and a 71 C10

Damn! I wanted to turbo my old 2.3... I've never heard of the issues with the duel plug that you asked. Those bastards will run forever if you treat it well

Re: 90 Ranger 2.3T pre-swapped
That's why I'm like a kid in a candy store with this truck. I miss my old Ranger but I've been kind of hesitant because instead of using the stock SVO head, he used the factory 2 plug and just ported it which doesn't make sense to me. But considering I don't have any experience with the little 2.3 I'm not sure if maybe it is a good idea to get better economy.

Well if something goes wrong, you can always slap the SVO on

Re: 90 Ranger 2.3T pre-swapped
True. I really wonder if anyones mounted the SVO intercooler through the hood. A lot of people say it sucks because like Subaru's it's over top of a hot header. But my solution would be is to just run a bit of plumbing it to be mounted through the hood and away with a heat shield through the hood.

You could make a heat shield for it or lay some foil down :-) look dumb but it would work!

1500 for a running, driving turbo ranger? seems like a deal to me

Re: 90 Ranger 2.3T pre-swapped
That's what I'm thinking. It's been a little project of his for 2 or 3 years and it eventually got parked in a storage unit. The body is straight and the engine seems to run strong. I'm just so worried about that dang head because I don't want to replace it every 4 months because I get a little happy on the ''fun pedal.''

Re: 90 Ranger 2.3T pre-swapped
Anyone know where to get aftermarket higher lobe cams? Also, it's a 90. Anyone know if a 8.8 with a LSD would work with the stock 5 speed transmission and driveshaft?

Re: 90 Ranger 2.3T pre-swapped
Coming from a guy who 'didn't' think to ask the same question, it's good and reasonable question. My 99 XLT 2.5l has 72000 and has not shown any hint of trouble when testing compression, examining spark plugs, no bubbles/oil present in the radiator and clean dip sticks. The 2.5 l4 engine is close to bulletproof when properly maintained.
My only gripe is the location of the front lifting points as I have mobility issues. Usin a floor jack helps, but then, so would reinforced lift points located just behind the front wheels.

Re: 90 Ranger 2.3T pre-swapped
I've only seen a few 2.5's out there. I started checking that website out that was linked...they have a lot. Lol, funny enough. I couldn't really find much on the 2.3T cam wise through numerous google searches. I'm hopefully going to pick the truck up next Sunday (assuming I don't have to work on the weekends like today) and even if it doesn't run right it's really going to be a project anyways and I can always just pick up a spare SVO motor as they go for about 500-700 on ebay or craigslist. About the rear end, I was wanting to switch up to a larger 8.8 because he has the stock 7.5 in there and has a welded diff...I'm not a drifter and I don't want the rear end to grenade on me (been there, done that...I'm not a historian and don't want to witness history repetition), not to mention I just want something I can count on to be more reliable. Unless maybe I do the rear disk swap like I've always wanted to do and just rebuild the diff.
