Exclamation Catalytic converter is shot, what are my options?

My truck is at the shop right now, it was running a code for a bad catalytic converter on bank 2 (if I remember correctly) I changed out the 02 sensors, and checked the fuses, to narrow down all possibilities. I just got a call stating that it is indeed a bad catalytic converter and that they recommend changing out the entire Y pipe, which will cost $1,200 because they have to get OEM parts. Apparently they had tried this once before on the same year truck using after market cats and they could not get the check engine code turn off. They believe it was because the after market parts didn't have enough platinum in there.

This is a reputable shop and I believe them, so I'm wondering if there is any other route that you guys have gone in order to fix this problem. My truck is overdue for state inspection and I need to have a full history on my OBD; in other words, I cannot just clear my codes and then go in.

i was going to recommend a tune, headers and full exhaust since you're looking at having to spend the $ either way.. until i read state inspection.

Ive learned my lesson dicking around with these sensitive sissy ass trucks, they only like FOMOCO parts. From oil filters to slave cylinders. Hub bearings to spark plugs. They're picky. And since you have to pass inspection.. Might as well have it done right.

Yeah, state inspection is just one of the many things that I can't stand about New Jersey. I already have a tuner, which is probably why I never realized the check engine light until last month when I returned the truck to stock. There's someone over on R-F that wrecked his truck a while ago, we're trying to figure out how much shipping would be to see if I could use his old Y-pipe with 130k miles on it.

Your best/cheapest option would be to get a high flow cat from someplace like Summit. They are universal and can be easily welded in with a 110v mig welder.

"Universal" Cats are hit and miss...they will work sometimes but other times they won't. It all depends on the placing of the "honeycomb" inside of it. If they deal with mufflers, i would think that they could maybe get it from someone else, but alot of fords aren't made by anybody else. And as far as replacing the whole Y-Pipe, that is the only way you can buy them, I believe. The only other way would be to buy them by the side, but idk if they make them that way....and as far as buying the used one, make sure that the seller tapes up the ends of the pipe as soon as it comes off of the truck, b/c I've seen plenty of times where it doesn't seem to sound/work right after being exposed to outside air for too long. Sorry for the novel, just trying to help lol

Maurice, I'd go that route, but like I said in my original post and what SPless has just posted, I don't want to take the chance of it not working. This is all for state inspection, otherwise I'd just run it as is with my tuner.

SPless, can you elaborate on the not working right if it wasn't taped up? I know that he's had it apart, because he's going to check on a shipping price for me tomorrow. I do not know if it has been taped up or not, but I will ask.

If you go with a Dynomax universal high flow cat, they are emission compliant. There is no way they could fail your truck in inspection.

Well, idk if it would affect much with the catalyst, but my dad cut a muffler off a newer ranger, and it laid around for about a week before he put it on his truck, and it had a weird tone to it...to my knowledge I don't know about it affecting anything really, I've just heard rumors about it and figure its better safe than sorry. I know I said I've seen it happen before, sorry about that...pretty much all I've seen was with mufflers. Also, I would tape them up anyways to keep small animals out of them.

your truck should have 3-4 cats

the y-pipe has 2 (one one each side as a "pre-cat) and one main one before the muffler, that may or may not be 2 cats as well

the y-pipe cats do not make enough of a difference to cause a check engine light. The rear o2 sensor that measures cat efficiency is only reading that MAIN cat. You can easily eliminate the other 2 one the ypipe with any codes.

The front mount o2 sensors monitor air-fuel ratio, the rear monitors the cat efficiency, so for them to say you have a bank 2 cat code is a little of a stretch

Scott, I read the code before bringing the truck into them, it's a P0430, which does effect the cat. I looked it up online and went through all of the possible causes, but it didn't work, the only thing left is the cat.
I remember when I was researching tuners that it stated your cats might burn out quicker and I think that's what may have happened. I've been running one now for 5 - 6 years.

I got them to knock 5% off the price which helps a little bit, they're ordering the part today.

Winks, what I am saying is, there's no way for them to know which cat is bad by just pulling a code. The ypipe cats are not big enough to throw a code on their own, only the Main cat can do that. Also for them to pin-point a 1 sided cat code on a ranger is impossible, because there is no code that says that for ranger-explorers

I understand what you're staying now Scott.

In the end, I just said screw it and told them to throw on a new Y pipe from Ford. I need this thing to pass state inspection ASAP. Hopefully I'll be able to make a bit back on taking my old cats to the scrap yard.

What did that cost you? I have a leak coming from the y-pipe/passenger manifold I can't seem to fix.

Ford just quoted me $2400 my cost for the y-pipe
