Default Fuel gauge stopped working

So I filled up my tank (8.5 gallons) about a week ago and noticed that my fuel gauge only went up to a half a tank (I was at a quarter of a tank, but I thought it went down pretty fast.). It started going down kind of fast again, then went up a little, then started going down what seemed like proportionally slow. I filled up again today and the gauge didn't move at all. Any ideas?

It could be a bad Fuel level sensor

agreed.

May also be a leaky fuel filler hose but that wouldn't explain why your gauge only went half up so probably fuel level sensor.

That's in the tank right? I'd have to drop it to replace it?

I've never had a Ford that had a properly working fuel gauge for the entire life of the vehicle.

My current truck made it to about 165k miles, and the gauge is fine below 3/4 tank, but doesn't go above 3/4.

Most of the ones I've had were pegged at empty.

Well I think I'll probably just live with it then, as long as I fill up between 200-250 miles I shouldn't have any problems
Thanks for the replies!

When I purchased my 2000 Ranger over 1 yr ago the gas gauge was pegged on full, I had to pull the bed off the truck to replace the fuel filler hose & pipe & when it was off I pulled the pump to find the float arm laying in the bottom of the tank. I clipped it back on to the sender & it has worked since.
